View Full Version : Muting a single string while strumming...?

I've been playing guitar for over a year now and I'm pretty familiar with the major chords and can play rhythm quite good... I've ran into stuff like this before but not this cramped.. Here's what it looks like...

How do I mute that string??? I can't find a way to place my fingers all on the 2nd fret and still be able to play it easily. Any suggestions???

I've been trying to use my middle finger to hold the E string, and the rest to hold the others but it gets cramped and hard to make quickly since they are all on the same fret.

I just picked up my guitar to see, and there is not a real comfortable way that I can find. So that brings me to the possible conclusion that the tab is wrong.....the problem with 95% of all tab found on the Internet.

But lets give you some examples of possibilities.

If there was not a first string open, or the need for the open 2nd string open with the hammer on....then this is what you would do. The numbers in parenthesis are what fingers to use.

For this you are muting the 5th string by lightly touching the surface of your 2nd finger to the string, while using the same finger to fret the 6th string 2nd fret. Then use your 3rd finger to bar the 4th, 3rd and 2nd strings. You are muting the 1st string with your 3rd finger by bending your finger backward slightly at the last joint of your finger.

B:---2(3)----
G:---2(3)----
D:---2(3)----
A:---x(2)----
E:---2(2)----

For this, same deal as above. But this time use your thumb (T) to play the 6th string and mute the 5th. And your first finger does the bar of the 4th, 3rd and 2nd.

In order to get the first string open, you need to use 3 separate finger on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th strings. So that means 123, or 234

This is doable, but awkward

If you use your thumb on the 6th string, then it is also pretty awkward. If you left the 5th string open instead of muting, this one is probobly your best bet.

Itis my guess that someone was trying to notate 2 guitar parts into one. Or that the bass player was play the note on the 6th string 2nd fret. Bad tabs are the source of much frustration for many beggining guitar players.
