View Full Version : String buzzing on new guitar, strings too thick?

Hi, i just bought a new guitar. It's an Ibanez GRX70.
Before this one I had a cheap no-brand guitar.

When I play chords on this guitar which include the low E and A, it easily starts buzzing.
I have to press much harder to get the low E and A properly on the fretboard.
The Buzzing is only there when playing chords from the 5th fret and up.

Are the strings new and do they need to loosen a bit?
Do I just have too heavy strings?
Or is the problem something else?

Problem is solved, I readjusted the string height at the bridge.

It would be nice to believe that guitars purchased from guitar stores are properly set up. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case. Partly this is due to the fact that experienced players will want it set up a specific way, and partly that they couldn't be bothered.

While raising the bridge may have solved the problem for the time being it may be a problem with the relief in the neck. You may even have a hump above the 12th fret if it's a bolt on neck. The easiest way to see what the neck is doing is to take a straight edge (a carpenters square works good for this) and simply stand the edge up along the frets. Then look carefully at the gaps underneath the straight edge above each fret. There should be a slight curve to the neck making the frets drop away from the straightedge slowly from each end of the neck. If you've got something that looks like a wave in relation to the straight edge (and this won't be very pronounced) take it in to a luthier and have them take a look. It may simply need to be set up (in which case spend the money and have him do it) or he may tell you there's a major problem with the neck. If there's a major problem, do not let him fix it if you bought it from a store. Return it and ask for a replacement. A good store will do it and return your old guitar to Ibanez. If it's used, well, I'd say play it as long as it serves and then replace it.

Nice looking guitar by the way, how's it play.

Well, the man in the shop raised the bridge for that particular string, others strings didn't have the prob so it's probably not the neck. Well, it's fixed now anyway.

I haven't got many experience with different guitars, this one plays just MUCH better than the last one i owned :D (looks better too, my color is jewel blue).
I also tried more expensive guitars in the shop but I could hardly notice the difference. Probably because I'm only playing guitar for a year.
My previous guitar sucked btw, never buy anything with the name "starfire" on it.

Glad to hear you got it sorted. The Schecter C-1 I got was perfectly set up when I bought it three weeks ago... damn fine guitar (Black in case anyone was wondering).

Nice guitar you have, btw.
