Why do i always break my G-string? I don't think i'm tuning it too high. I use D'addario Bronze 80-20, i think. Anyway, i broke my G-string that i've had for about one month, then i went to put on a new one, and while tuning, i broke it. What's the deal?

I don't wear G-Strings, but, maybe try a different size? :) jk

A friend of mine breaks his guitar G string often. He plays it too hard I think and at sharp angle. But he won't listen to me. It could be a bur or sharp edge on your bridge that might be causing it. Check your tuning too.

I don't think I've broke a string in the three years I've been playing.

Peace!

Where exactly did the break occur on the string?

Lol, it seems like everyone always breaks their G-strings...I think it's just so they can walk around saying that they broke their G-string and everyone laughs, no matter how many times they've heard it ;) I always break my B-string though....

"80-20" Is that that gauge? Those are some heavy stings. I wouldnt know how you break em, I use Martin Custom lites .011-.052 and I have never broken a string tuning. :p

Elixir Acoustic Light-guage Bronze...before that I used Fender...never broken a string ever! (Knocks on wood)

man i have the same problem
on my acoustic and electric alike. i think it has something to do with being pulled so far past the nut on the headstock, that is if you are using a standard 3 top 3 bottom head stock.
the trick is to give it a few tuggs when your tuning it up to loosen it. pull it out about 2 inches right above the 12th frett a couple of times, but be carefull not to break it, then tune it up and play away, it should be fine, i dont really run into the problem anymore

I have been playing for about a year now, I guess, and never have broken a string. Hope my luck doesn't turn around now... lol!

The only time I have ever broken a string was when I attempted a 2 and a half step bend, somewhere high up on the B string... Don't ask why I attempted a bend like that, especially on worn down strings... but yeah... As an electric guitarist in the acoustic section... I will be quiet now. :D

I too have never broken a string on my acoustic, playing or tuning. I change strings at least once a month, usually every two weeks. I play an Ovation Celebrity CC057 with Martin Acoustic SP light .12-.54

Strings should not break under normal playing conditions if changed regularly. They could be weakend by the acidity of your sweat, and become brittle by corrosion (highly likely if you have old strings and/or your hands sweat alot when you play). There could be a defect in the string (although not likely if it is always the same string that breaks). There could be a defect in the guitar itself (more likely with an electric that has a metal nut and bridge).

In reference to the G string (or third string), it is a solid non-wound string (like the B and E) and will be one of the weaker strings.

If it breaks during restringing it is probably taking the brunt of the load (that is, if you string from low E or 6th string to high E or 1st string). If it is breaking during play, your alternate tuning could be putting excess tension on that string. Hope this helps.
