Hey how could I improve my speed and accuracy greatly without a metronome? Also what other tricks should i know?

Just play really fast, whatever you want, untill you get good at it.
BUT.............
An hour without a metronome is like 15 minutes with one. I highly recomend getting one.

yep, go to powertabs.com , i think thats it( not powertabs.net ...i repeat not powertabs.net) go to www.powertabs.com and click on metronome. :D

That riff is NOT the correct way to play "Smoke On The Water"!!!

Ritchie actually finger picks two strings at a time and the opening notes are the D on the A (5th) string at the 5th fret and the G on the D (3rd) string at the 5th fret.

I have his own words on this on DVD where he says everyone in the world plays it wrong.

there is a lesson on http://www.guitarists.net called "Building Dexterity - The Spider Technique"...it will help you alot...its under the lessons section....basically its an exercise that works the four fingers on your left hand and improves picking accuracy....if you get to the point where you can do this exercise extremely fast, you will be able to pick anything accurately using any number of strings...

then backwards. alternate picking everytime, do that up and down the fret, but dont go fast at first. Go slow. You need to go to slep so your fingers will be programmed what to do so when you do play fast you dont have to think what your doing. PLus if you start off fast and mess up your fingers will do it everytime. BUt if you go slow and relize you mess up then fix it your fingers will play it correctly when you go fast. Start off with 16th notes at lets say 80bpm ( i know it might be slow but it will help) then the next week go to 90 ect...Make sure you play everynote perfectly and on time so you will play perfectly and on time when your playing 16th notes at 190 bpm...it could happen

It's just the very first thing I learned on the guitar and thought it sounded good. IMO anyway! :D

isnt that really fast to start off at? thats 8 notes per click....isnt it? my god, I could never pull that off...

I don't think anyone's mentioned playing that fast yet. ;)
guitardeamOn mentioned 16th notes, which are four per beat. 8 notes per click would be 32nd notes. Thats a little fast for working on technique. :)

I think 16th notes at 80 bpm is already too fast just for starting, 8th notes are a lot better in this case I think.

Well then do 16th notes at 70 maybe 60 bpm. *th note triplets are good too but if your JUST starting like 30 mins ago then yea 8th notes are good.

check out the chromatics from hell that guitardeam0n posted. they well sure as hell help your speed and will help your accuracy as well
