What is Thrash Metal, does Stone Sour and Murderdolls fall in this category, if not wut
and what is Nu-Metal???
Griffin_Page

Thrash Metal: Stuff like Slayer, early Metallica, Pantera, the heavy fast metal stuff. It's pretty much the hardcore heavy metal stuff. Stone Sour and Murderdolls don't fit in tho, they're more hard rock. Nu-Metal is a newer style of rock that has elements of rap and rock mixed together. Korn was the first big numetal band, and other stuff that goes in that category are many, from Disturbed and Taproot and such to System of a Down, Slipknot, Mudvayne and etc. I know some people might get pissed for the bands i put here, but its true. They have the characteristics of a nu-metal band, and no not all of them suck as many people here would have you believe. Nu-Metal is usually recognizable with a singer who does a sing/rap thing in a way, and the guitarists usually stick to Drop-D power chords. There are numetalists who solo tho, but for the most part most new metal is nu-metal, with a few exceptions. Hope that explained it.

Nu Metal?

linkin park are candy nu metal, watered down pop mtv crap.

Agreed
I hate it when venues put lame nu metal bands as support for thrash metal bands.
ie --> As some of you may know - I went to Anthrax last week, and the support band was Breed 77, they are, to their credit, better than a lot of bands, but you just don't put them with Anthrax, or any thrash outfit. They won't get ANY respect from the crowd, they certainly got nothing from me or the people that I was with (random people) They were doing the whole 'I can afford to jump around cuz my guitar parts aren't hard' thing, it just annoyed me. At least I didn't get sweaty...

Nu-metal isn't all bad, but you shouldn't listen to metal unless you like thrash. How can anyone think that MuDvAyNe and Biohazard and not like old Metallica?!? Sorry, I've got a friend who is like that, and he pisses me off...
I can't see anything Metal in Mudvaynes sound.
A lot of people will disagree with me, but it's just so not metal. And what is with their appearance? Jesus.
Biohazard are hardcore - and they're cool for that.
However, go and listen to Kill 'Em All, and then listen to Mudvayne, when you have stopped laughing, ask yourself if you still think they sound similar.

hmm...linkin park used to be quite underground. they were actually around much longer than pple noe...they just getting more mainstream and commercialised.. i guess they cant really help it tho.. alot of people just classify popular music as mainstream, when mebbe the artist had actually planned to play that, or their own style just evolved...
popmusic_sux
05-17-2003, 11:48 AM
i heard some of linkin park's old stuff, their underground stuff, and to be honest, some of it really isnt that bad at all. but its the fact that they changed their sound into something completely different just so they could make it to the mainstream (in some cultures this is referred to as "selling out") is what i dont like about them

i'm trying to find their older albums, cuz i really dun mind hiphop stuff...cant seem to find it aniwhere. well i guess so.. but isnt it true that u have to adjust to the current society's music in a way ?
i mean metallica did change their style also...from speed metal to the black album one... then their latest st anger..
Well, a better comparison wouldve been:
Kill 'Em All
Ride The Lightning
Master Of Puppets
...And Justice For All...
and then..BAM!

Oh man, I've heard Metallica mentioned, I've heard Slayer mentioned, and these are the best examples of Thrash Metal. HOWEVER, there are some bands crossing the line people! In Flames, Iced Earth, Children of Bodom, are they death...or are they thrash? FAR from nu-metal, Children of Bodom is fairly new, but kicks all other new metal groups out of the water. Sure, they're from Sweden, but so are In Flames. Now what's this? Ah yes, the elusive "Melodic-Death-Metal" genre...yes, this needs MUCH more recognition. All you people posing as metal fans, I don't care if you are mistaken and like nu-metal, that's your opinion, but stop thinking that they are talented! They have ZERO talent. Just take a listen to aforementioned bands:Metallica, Slayer, In Flames, Iced Earth, and Children of Bodom. Others escape my mind at the moment, but ditch the talentless nu-metal junkies, and here what real talent awaits. You aren't sacrificing any head-banging, believe me, these guys play harder than any dumb nu-metal groups. Believe me! Take a little listen, and you'll never go back to nu-metal!

Thrash metal is awesome, nu-metal sucks. That's clear, but nu-metal isnt the only new kind of heavy music out there. Death metal and Black Metal have been on the rise lately (mostly in Europe), and there are millions of awesome bands out there. Technical, melodical, soft-voiced, growlers, FAST, slow, everything, and its done very very well. So give a listen to some of these bands (there are many more, but try these)
Opeth
Amon Amarth
Soilwork
Behemoth
Entombed
In Flames
Death
Lacuna Coil
The Black Dahlia Murder
Cradle of Filth (Gothic, but European)
Anathema
Carcass

Some guy posted that death metal could also be called black metal... sorry but this is not correct. Death metal is a style with a growling singer, great grinding guitar with solos and drum with double bass drum kicks...
Black metal is alike with a growling singer but they tend to have more fantastic, or medieval lyrics if you like. They usually also wear makeup and other gothic things..
Believe me people , the 2 styles are different for someone who knows metal.
Check out these bands
Death Metal Bands:
Death
Carcass
Neuraxis (canada Yeah!! :D )
Cryptopsy
Nile
Suffocation
Amorphis
Cephalic Carnage
Black Metal Bands:
Cradle of Filth
Children Of Bodom
Dimmu Borgir
Immortal
Dark Tranquillity
Venom

Ok, like someone else said, death and black metal are completely different things. Thrash/Speed Metal are basically the same thing. (Some debate this.) There's no such thing as "hard metal," to my knowledge.
Nu-metal is generally hard rock + small metal influence + X factor. The X factor would be another genre (rap, hip-hop, etc.).
For some other genres, try...
Melo-death:
In Flames
Dark Tranquillity
Edge of Sanity
Thrash:
TestAmenT
Anacrusis
(Just a few non Big 4 ((Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax)) thrash groups. Yes. There are other thrash groups besides those 4 =P)
Power metal:
Blind Guardian
Jag Panzer
Iced Earth (thrash/power, older stuff is more thrashy)
Prog:
Opeth (prog w/ death vocals)
Dream Theater
Symphony X
Porcupine Tree (prog rock? debatable)
Avant-Garde:
maudlin of the Well
Green Carnation

Ok, on the first post here, Disturbed was put down as nu-metal. To some people it may seem like it but they're more of Speed Metal with slight Rap Metal tendencies in some songs, like in one part of Meaning of Life near the end of the song.

Why do some people call Linkin Park rap metal? Ever heard Downset? That's what rap-metal sounds like. Linkin Park are just some gimps who get a guy to strum a power chord every so often so their hip hop/rap band can fall into the hard rock category because they're too ugly for pop.
Heavy metal:
Iron Maiden
Thrash metal:
Slayer
Speed metal:
Annihilator
Power metal:
Pantera
Hard rock:
Ac/Dc
Death Metal:
Carcass
Punk:
Nofx
Pop-metal:
Wildhearts
Pop-punk:
Blink 182
Rap-metal:
Downset
Hardcore rap metal:
Biohazard
Hardcore punk:
Sick of it all
****-rock:
L.A. Guns
Hair metal:
Poison
Nu-Metal:
Korn
Teenage girl metal:
LInkin Park
Hardcore funky punky skate thrash:
Suicidal Tendencies
Edit: Korn & Blink 182 are the only ones I don't have at least 1 album by infact offspring are the only pop punk band I have albums by and I don't own a nu-metal album (oh the pride). I've been into all these genres in the past.

holy **** man! i cant believe some of the guys here. and hey speed metal = thrash metal. ok ill give u insight on what variuos kinds of metal are there. ill give u the core foundations of metal and some genre of rock that is essential to metal. as some of u might know a lot of bands are branded into one category or genre of music but in reality they really create their own music and can do different stuff. for example MOTORHEAD or MISFITS sounds more punk but they are metal. they mightve been the ones who inspired the thrash metal movement which began with METALLICA's NO LIFE TILL LEATHER - considered to be the 1st thrash song ever. well this is what i know about the whole metal story but please enlighten me if u find my opinions wrong. =)
founders of metal = black sabbath
heavy metal = catchy tunes with distroted sounds and cool solos, high pitch singing(randy rhoads, van halen, iron maiden, king diamond, etc... and the whole new wave of british heavy metal that happened in the late 70's and early 80's)
thrash metal = also known as speed metal, it sort of combined punk rock elemnts with heavy metal and a new sound was born(metallica, slayer, testament, anthrax, megadeth,c arcass and so on...)
death metal = lyrics inspired by death, destruction, suffering etc... drop tunings and groling voices (napalm death, amen etc...)
black metal = this one's easy! one word SATANIC!gothic nature of lyrics and costumes(danzig, cradle of filth etc...)well slayer can fit here but their riffs are faster and they dont dress up ridiculously
progressive rock/metal = in my opinion this is the category which technicality in playing is the key. often heard with a keyboard, the fastest(in my opinion) and academically inclined guitarists are in this genre(dream theater etc...)
hardcore = this is just straight up in your face straight to the point.(hatebreed, victory records bands etc...) in my opinion this is the fore founding father genre of nu-metal.
nu-metal = this just sucks!(korn,limp bizkit etc...)
DontHaveAGuitar

Melodic death is a very well known genre, actually. It's just that there's only one or two melodic death bands in america. Many people know of In Flames now, since theyre getting airplay all over the place.

Why do people waste their time worrying about what label to attach to music be it metal, rock, jazz, blues, funk, pop, or whatever? Why not just listen to and decide if YOU like because of the music instead of trying to attach a label to it?

because, for example, some people dont like death metal, but they like thrash metal, some dont like nu-metal, they like just plain old fashioned heavy metal. we just categorize it in terms of how it sounds for the sake of just categorizing it or because we're bored. not sure if that explained anythign but im posting on the off-chance that it does
Lol, that was pretty good. Like you can go to a shop and know where to find your CD's because they are under the 'Metal' section. It makes things easier. Also when people ask you can just say what genre you listen to - ie folkpop/sludgecore/thrash/etc

Man, labels suck.
There pointless. You can label everything to death.
Slayer - Trash, heavy, hardcore metal...
Biohazard - Thrash, heavy, hardcore, rapcore, rapmetal, oldskool metal...
Korn - psedo-agnst, nu-, hardcore grunge, experimental, emo metal.
Labels are gay...Hendrix said it best.
