Well before i ask this question.I can probably be assumed on this site as the person who explains things the hard way or the unorthidox.
But my question is about substitutions.Are they basically notes added to a key from another scale/key?If so which key?The same key but different scale or does it matter?
Example if i wanted to substitute the iv chord of Ionian for iv of lets say mixolydian.Would I be right in assuming that its called a substitution or does it simply mean changing or altering the notes of the iv to anything other than the modal notes of the chord.
If your confused so am i:D

yeah now I'm confused,lol!

You can substitute any chord for another if they share two or more notes in common.Then you have to decide if you like that sound better.
