well, I got a whammy bar, it works great, but I can't bend anything up with it... The metal thing at the bottom (can't remember the name of it) where the bar screws in is pressed against the guitar body... how can I raise it so that I can bend both up and down?

Put heavier gauge strings on :D , that did the trick for me

I'm not sure about this but you could also try to unscrew the srews (:)) in the back a bit, or maybe you could remove a spring. This will reduce the force on the bridge thing (dunno how it's exactly called in english)
The srews and springs are located in the back of your guitar behind the plastic plate.
Ask someone else about this before you try anything. Maybe ESP_Viper knows how to do this.

Those bridges are not intended to be pulled up. If you mess with it to be able to pull up, you will trash the bridge eventually. The only bridges that are truly designed for being pulled up are recessed bridges (floyd rose recessed, kahler, etc).

A friend of mine tried that on my guitar and ended up bending the bar out of shape  , so they are probably not meant for it.

You can definitely set a vintage trem to float. Yngwie, Scotty Henderson, Hammett, and some more people (including me) do it and it works fine. Make sure to lube all points of friction and to use Fender Bullets strings.
