Smells Like Teen Spirit is a good solo to get you started.

Unfortunately the first solo I forced myself to learn was Led Zeppelin's Black Dog. Not alot of real fast runs, but definately a very hard solo to play and get to sound good. I've been working on it for two and a half months and it still doesn't sound that great.

yea, that was the first actual song i learned. on a classical too. didn't have my electric baby yet. sounded like crap, but it got me started. and to a good start too...it's my absolute fav. song to solo too- every mode and minor scale you can make in some way sound good to it. that's another thing- learn your modes!!! and also melodic minor and harmonic minor.

Ofcourse it depens how good you have became. I don't know what the avarage time is. Learn at first some short and easy solos and then go harder and harder that way you'll develop on learning them, but you still may need to learn something for months (if you have strenght enough to do it).
My proper first solo was Califonrication, then Smells Like Teen Spirit and then Some Oasis solos.

if you get fed up easily, then you're not going to get anywhere... you've gotta practice SLOWLY, and progressively increase the speed.
Also, try to take a solo one lick at a time. You can't play what you don't know, so learn all the notes, say 2 measures at a time.

Dang.. i think that was one of my first solos... yeah because that came out about the time i started playing.. that's a great starter solo, because it sounds pretty cool and its easy to play, it's a good way to begin anyway.

well, one solo thats pretty easy to play, you just need some effcts and have a downtuned guitar to make it sound right, would be chevelle's "the red." simply put, its 4 measures (i think) of playing the 9th fret of the d string, a little slide down to the open d, then 4 measures of the second fret of the d string, then repeat. theres a little more to it than that, i.e. rhythm of the picking, but its a pretty easy solo in my opinion.

Another easy one that I got started on was the Top Gun Anthem. Thats easy and it teaches you good sounding licks. It wasnt the first I ever learned I cant even remember my first. It wasnt Paranoid. But thats also a good one o learn.
I still remember my first solo... * wavy flashback effects*... :D
It was for a school project.. we had to learn a solo, over a certain length, and degree of difficulty. Needless to say, as a rank amateur, I was not too impressed. I talked to my guitar teacher about it, and since I was already learning "Stairway to Heaven" I ended up doing that solo. When the big day came around, and we had to perform in class, I totally blew it... :D. I screwed up sooo badly. Oh well... the moral of the story (There has to be some reason for the rant, if you've even read this far!) is never attempt a hard solo in front of a group your peers... it's just not fun. :D (funny, but not fun.)
Just to prove it to myself, I just fired up the amp and ripped off that solo, at proper speed, and with all the right notes. (So there!)
The first solo I [attempted] to learn was the one in TRANSYLVANIA by iron maiden. at the time i was like "o**** hes fast" but atleast now i can *almost* play it correctly.

first solo i ever learned was smells like teen spirit.
the way i learn a solo is, before ever trying to play it, i listen to the song for a long time first until i can go through what the solo sounds like in my head. that was you concentrate on actually playing instead of trying to remember what comes next. i may listen to a song for 2 weeks before ever looking at a tab for it, but once i look at the tab it only takes a second to learn it.
as for how long it takes to learn one, it gets faster with time.
it took close to a week to teach myself the first mini solo in sweet home alabama, but that was a year ago. with improvement and practice, i just learned the entire crazy train solo in about 10 minutes this morning. so just stick with it, start easy solos, and play your )@#^ off

my first solo was hotel california by the eagles, and then stairway to heaven, im told alot that those arent good solos to start with, but i practiced hotel california for about a month before i got it right but stairway to heaven only took two days, so i think stairway is easier, ive been playing for 5 month now, and im really into solos, i can play at least ten

My first was "Runnin' With The Devil" by Van Halen - bar none the most straight forward & easiest solo Eddie's ever done.

Well, the first solo I ever learned for guitar was Iron Maiden - Children of the Damned. No not that crazy tapping thing at the end, the little intro 'solo'.
Easy and sounds good. So good, in fact, I still like to play it.

I'm currently in the midst of trying out all sort of solos from Metallica to No Doubt. The first solo I learnt was 'Don't Speak' by No Doubt. Personally this is a brilliant place to start because its a nice little recognisable tune - very hard to forget. Easy to play along with cause its not at some super fast pace. It also gets all your fingers working and using loads of slides, hammer-ons and pull offs. I'm attempting 'one' by Metallica. I work through it a phase at a time. Like some guy said before, work through it slowly, recognise yourself with the solo so you can hear it in your head. Don't go learning the whole thing at once - though this can be done you'll probably end up confusing yourself. Another solo (or fill more like) which is simple and effective to learn is that little ditty in the middle of 'The greatest view' by silverchair. Again, like No Doubt, easy to remember, short and sweet, gets all your fingers working and is fun to play. I could go on about loads of things which have helped me on my way (still i'm not a pro) but they get you picking up speed and finger movements. Hope thats helped!:D
Solos, licks etc... people should try:
Don't Speak - No Doubt
Smells like teen spirit - Nirvana
One - Metallica
The Greatest view - Silverchair
Intro to Layla (unplugged) - Eric Clapton
Pretty Little Ditty - RHCP

Well, I just got an electric guitar pretty recently so I don't know many solos. Right now I'm working on Metallica's Nothing Else Matters. Like many of you I like to be able to hear the solo in my head and powertabs help a lot with that. However for this solo, near the end I can't seem to follow it. It just seems that my ear is too "slow" for the solo. Does anyone else have the same problem or know how to fix this? Is there a way to slow down the rate at which the powertab is played?
Thanks

You can change the tempo of powertabs by clicking on the spot you want to slow down and putting a tempo marker (in Music Symbols). You can set the tempo at whatever you want.

Several people said they learnt paranoid first. I haven't had a listen to that in a while so I can't remember the difficulty but can some1 tell me where I can get a correct version of the Tab?
Also, nothing else matters was one of the first solo's I learnt (been playing bout 6 months now) and to start with I couldn't get the faster bit at the end right but as long as I played the right notes in the right timing I didn't stress over it and now that I'm better I can play it better. I don't know many solo's prolly about 10 ish coz I don't have much tab but when I do learn something I find it's much easier if you know the song well.
The other day I learnt the intro solo to sanitarium and it took me under 5 mins and I was quite pleased but then when I tried to learn highway to hell I couldn't do it becasue I needed to keep referring to the cd (even tho i've listened to that song for years) and after half an hour I couldn't nearly get the end right so I gave up :)
I feel that if I can't hear the song in my head and am having trouble playing it then I'll move on and come back to it another time. There is no point spending long periods like a month or summat to learn a hard (relative to you) solo when you could have learnt 20 easy ones in that time. You can come back and learn it when you are better.
Sorry bout the length :)
