Again Im back to ask the people who know....the D chord..now most professionals recommend playing this chord as follows:
1st finger - G
2nd Finger - E
3rd Finger - B

Now for some reason, I never looked at the "correct" finger charts when learning, so I started playing it:

1st Finger - E
2nd Finger - G
3rd FInger - B

Basically just switching around my 1st and 2nd fingers. I find it way easier to play it this way....the all the strings sound out better and I have an easier time switching from it....Now as someone who knows nothing...will the incorrect fingering hinder me in the future when it comes time to move on? I know for example alot of people don't play the G with their pinky which makes it harder to switch to C.....any thing similar with this? Just to make sure I don't start any bad habits......Oh yeah and thanks to all you guys who keep replying to my rookie questions...You have been very helpful....:)

I really would try and get yourself to play with your first finger on the 3rd string, and your 2nd finger on the 1st. Now you are probably going to get some answers from people that say to "play it the way that feels most comfortable to you". But the reason that your way feels more comfortable, is because that is the way that you accidentally learned it. I don't really think that this is the same as the G. I think you would be very hard pressed to find other guitarist using this unorthodox fingering. I personally think that you will find this fingering a hindrance to progress. And if your were taking private lessons from me, you would have no choice in the matter :)

Here is the strangest chord fingering I have ever seen. I had a student who like you looked at a chord chart, but not the fingering for a G chord. This is how he played it. The fingering is in parentheses.

E:---3(1)---
B:---0------
G:---0------
D:---0------
A:---2(2)---
E:---3(3)---

Thanks Shawn....Ya it was kinda a stunner when I actually looked at the correct fingering charts....but I tried the correct fingering this morning...and honestly after a few tries it was just as easy...the only hard thing is now getting my brain to cooperate on a regular basis:). You mentioned lessons...I have an interest in taking them but it seems people are split on them.....some say they are great for those who are truly serious...me I guess you would considered the "basement"player no rock star ambitions just want to play competently, I just get worried that I'm picking up bad habits (the D chord for example). That and added to the fact that I work an over night shift makes it kinda hard for me to get out, since I'm asleep by noon. I have been using this site religiously over the past five weeks (thats how long I been playing) and I guess thanks, every other site always offers a few tips until you get to the "buy my book" page, so its good to know some things are still free!!
