Playing scales

I know this will sound like a very stupid question but i really have no idea how to play scales...i read all about them here but i still don't understand what they're used for,or how my fingers should go...basically, how exactly do i play those scales?...i read it over and over again but it just doesn't seem to want to get into my head.
