Hughes and Kettner makes some great tube distortion pedals. I think musicians friend has them, but I'm not sure. Another good possibility is the Line 6 POD. It's a great processor.

Off of Musicians Friend I got a Rocktek DS-1. It's your average distortion but cheaper. I don't know if the Rogue's by Fender are any good. They're the same price though.

Sandman:
Roktek DS-1 is a pretty good disto pedal if it wasnt for the exxxxtra high gain it has. You have to reduce the guitar outpt volume to compensate the noise. Have u tried their ODR pedal?? It has a similar tone (Not flexible though) and is noisless.
SKA:
As far as a good disto pedal goes, tube pedals are always better but if u wana go SS, Then boss metal zone rokz!
ESP:
I dont know much abt l6 POD 2 other than its a rec amp so it gets tough to play on stage...So i went in for something more playable during band play-Korg 1500g. How do u manage the pod.

I've actually never gotten noise from mine and my guitar is full blast. I've not tried their ODR pedal...what's SS?

No noise? Surprising, considering mine along with hundreds of others (search the www) have complaints of xs noise.
BTW SS is solid state, ie all components are transistor based, no tubes.

The pod is extremely easy on stage if you have one of the foot pedals, preferably the big pedal board. It's got lots of functionality and features. It was designed for studio and live. The pedal board takes time with learning it. But it's like anything else, once you learn it: it's easy.

How can a distortion pedal have too much gain?

Yes I have the non rackmount one. I really like it. It's well worth the money!
A pedal can have too much gain when it sounds like complete noise and it squeals no matter what you do.

Yeah, that Marshall Jackhammer's pretty sweet. I think that the Ibanez SM-7 SmashBox is the best distortion pedal out there though.
