Modes?

i was reading in the black sabbath songbook i got about different progressions on songs, and these modes..i assume they're just talking about the orders the notes appear and riffing from that,but im probably wrong.. some examples they give are G-A-Bflat-C-D-Eflat-F, or the Aeolin mode.. (Which appear in the songs Black Sabbath and Iron Man) and E-F#-G#-A-B-C#-D Mixolydian mode...

Anyone care to elaborate on these, and maybe what other major modes are there(if they're important)
