Hi....I've decided that I want to learn the names of the notes on the neck (and standard notation). I've played piano for 9 years, so I know how to read music, it's just learning how to play standard with the guitar.
I was wondering if you guys had any tips or suggestions on learning the note names? Or if you just keep playing the notes on the strings over and over until you get it? I aleady know the E and A string natural notes, so I guess I only have 3 more left. Any tips though? And once I learn the note names, where do I go from there as far as learning how to read music on the guitar?
Thanks in advance...
flyguy :)

well theres several ways to go about it...ive tried at least 3 ways but never quite finished...id say im better off than i was a year ago tho ;)
1) one would be to learn scales and as you go thru them say the names of the notes out loud...

2) another is by octave shapes...

3) another way is to just sit down and draw out the fretboard over and over and label it...
http://www.cyberfret.com/first-fret/note-names/index.php
4) another way is to just learn the order on certain frets...ie...open strings in standard tuning is EADGBE...3rd fret is GCFA#DG...and so on and so forth....
5) some people just learn one string at a time...and realize they can figure out the note names as they go by way of whole and half steps...
it just depends on your personal learning style...i think the best ways for me were #1 and #4 altho i never finished like i said...but it seems to be agreed upon that its a pretty important thing to learn...
as far as how to put it together..you should realize how the fretboard works as in splitting it up into its octaves..there can be several places on the fretboard to play the exact same note...and depending on the length of your neck theres at least 3 octaves....
if you understand chord construction you can then look at the notes and realize that there can be several diff ways to form a chord and play it...
since you already read music i bet youll do just fine :)

This is a really neat poster, but it doesn't come up on the poster 1 link. I managed to save it as a picture, then print the picture via Windows XP.
