Sup guys. I started off guitar learning alot of Zeppelin and more bluesy stuff but lately I've been into alot of Metallica. Learning to shred definately won't hurt me when I'm playing solos or learning Metallica songs, but I don't know what to play. I have a metronome and all, but I need someone to show me some exercises/licks to use to practice shredding and to play. Thanks.

shredding. to me it means : putting as many notes as possible into as certain amount of bars.
or = really fast playing. to me.

er.the link is in the center of the page, not at the side. there's this box that says learning tracks with all the genres listed. or u can just click Lessons on the black top bar. then u can find the link at the blue side navigation bar..

basiclly using every string in a power chord?

kai_subfusc
05-15-2003, 05:17 PM
huh? strings from power chords? not strumming man..picking individual notes..wherever they may be from...

duffhackymaster
05-15-2003, 05:26 PM
so just playing single notes fast?

kai_subfusc
05-15-2003, 05:33 PM
well..that's my shallow view on it.
i guess there's something deeper than that.
but basically its just fast playing..

duffhackymaster

It's probobly real hard. Keep dreaming duff.:o

kai_subfusc

haha..its just speed..something technical. with enough practice it will come. just concentrate more on melodies, proper theory. and musical creativity.

Theory is hard for me. I have trouble memerizing all the note names and stuff. Recenly ive used tab and done stuff by ear. I know i can't get around doing theory, but it's kind of annoying.:(

kai_subfusc

theory is simple. its just logical stuff ..dat;s all. there's onli 7 notes! well 12 actually... once u get theory down, alot of thing u do start to make sense, why C , F and G sound good together, why this guitarist plays a riff using these notes over this chord ..etc

and u can start composing!

How do you memorize what each single note on the guitar is. I think its pretty hard.

kai_subfusc

count the frets!!one fret is half step!
or try doing this. if theres a note which u dunno, do an octave pattern to some place u are more familiar with.

It takes a loooonnnnnggggg time to get the names of all the notes on the neck... but, to me, Shredding is defined by a few different players, I'll just mention Yngwie Malmsteen here, and let others add their favorite shredder... If you want a good example, listen to Black Star, by Malmsteen. Usually shredding consists of sweep picking, arpeggios, and lots and lots of scales... all at fast speeds. :D

MetallicaGirl: Thank you, although I'm not sure which one you mean, as I have like 6 avatars that I switch between whenever I feel like it... and every time I come across another cool picture on the web, I add another one ;)

On Topic: I checked out the "30+ Insane Shredding Licks" thing... All I can say is wow... they are really insane. It's hard to believe that anyone can play those up to speed.

sorry guitargriff. but it was just a teeny weeny compliment.
sheesh. i feel like if they take the time to put it up, i might as well make it worth their time.

Theory has nothing to do with playing fast in my opinion...

Anyway I've been playing lately a little lick from movie called Crossroads. Have you seen it? The lick is from a guitar duel in the end of the movie. You can find a video clip or mp3 of it from Kazaa or somewhere. Just type "guitar duel".
Here is the tab and the lick is on the last line of the tab. http://www.angelfire.com/realm/skajaquada/personal/Crossroads_Suite.ptb

Since shredding is just playing fast, almost any lick is good

"Shredding" would be like: Yngwie,Paul Gilbert,Greg Howe,Tony MacAlpine,Vinnie Moore,Jason Becker,Marty Friedman type players who play extremely fast,neo-classical metal or instrumental, classical influenced electric guitar stuff etc.

Other super fast guitar players who don't play classical influenced (all the time) but still play amazingly fast and instrumental rock aren't considered "shred" even though it's the same thing but with more pentatonic influence or emphasis are players like: Satriani,Vai,Eric Johnson,Steve Morse etc.

They all smoke in my opinion so who cares if the "shred" label fits or not?

If they play that fast (and it sounds good) I don't care if they're playing the harmonic minor scale or the pentatonic scale THEY SHRED!

Thank you for the avatar compliments... I like yours too flea ;). I am eventually going to find one that will blow everyone out of the water... but I haven't yet, so... till then, I will just keep switching back and forth. :)

On topic: Who is your favorite shredder? I don't think I have one that I could say is my favorite, they all rock! :D

Van Halen's solos are so smooth. That's the only way I can explain it. I haven't heard another guitar player solo as smoothly as he does. No doubt though, that guys like Rhoades had faster, more imaginative solos in my opinion, and I'm a sucker for neo-classical stuff, but Van Halen's solos just flowed really well. But hands down to neo-classical music. I love it. MMM! :p

Michael Batio ;)

He's probably my favorite shred artist. Check out the No Boundaries song or the Speed Kills video. You can find both or either on Kazaa or somewhere.

Note: Michael 'Angelo' Batio

I have a hard time giving buckethead his due, since I'm a huge 87 - 93 GN'R fan. I just don't think of it as GN'R without Slash & Izzy...
Although he is one crazy motherf***er, both in life & guitar, I'll give him that.
