I'm relatively new to the electric guitar and I'm trying to learn how to play some cool r&b/funk guitar chords like those played in 70s R&B/Funk songs. For example, the song "Get Down on it" by Kool and the Gang. The chords sound VERY easy to play, but I just can't seem to figure out what the chords are... can someone help me out?
If you know ANY cool r&b/funk chords, let me know... I've been playing around with minor7 chords alot lately, but I need a some more cool chords in my arsenal.
alot of the trick to this stuff is that you dont really play the whole chord...by that I mean dont try and play all six strigs. Your just kissin' parts of the chords and use a really light touch and you gotta have a wahwah. I'll bet you know the chords you need it's just that your trying to play too much of them. Plus remember the guitar in this stuff is almost a percussion instrument so you gotta be thinkin like your rubbin a stick down the back of a wooden ribbed fish percussion instrument. light and airy and then when you feel good you can lay into the chords more and end up with old Chilie Pepper sounding type stuff
All of this just my opinion

9ths, 7ths, 7b9ths... and just straight major chords work pretty well. The rhythm is everything, keep the sound clean, and dont forget to mute the chords to keep it staccato. Also, muting the strings for the straight "chunk" sound is great, IMO.

These guys are giving some good advice. When playing funk, the right hand (for a right handed player) is everything. It's all about the percussive feel, your left hand can sometimes sorta take it easy and let your pick hand do all the work. A lot of it is played on the "and" beat... like: one AND two AND three AND, etc. and tightness is key. Just my opinion anyway.
