I've been playing rock since I bought my first guitar (about 1 year ago), but now I feel the need of playing some other stuff. First of all I realised that most of the artists I listen to (AC/DC, Led Zep) were influenced by some blues artists. Besides I got sort of tired playing the same style all the time. So I went to a music store a listened to some CDs from the blues section (B.B. King, John Lee Hooker), and I liked it a lot, especially the Hooker stuff. Now comes the question. Which albums/compilations/whatever with some great blues songs would you recommend to me? Thanks for yer help.

try some eric clapton stuff, one of the best is "Eric Clapton & BB King - Riding with the king"

Really? You liked Riding with the King? I didnt really think it was up to scratch with their previous stuff. Oh well, just my opinion.

Some breat blues artists are Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter, Robert Johnson and Stevie Ray Vaughn and there is a great Hendrix album called ':Blues'.

as far as EC is concerned From the Cradle has some of ECs better blues. Look into Buddy Guy, Sun House, Johnny Winter/ Muddy Waters. There are several types of blues, look into them all

I won twenty dollars
and a baritone sax
but I had to pawn my clothes
just to pay off the tax
it seems I always lose
you gotta suffer if you wanna
play the blues

-David Bromberg

I have a girlfreind - Rock and Roll
My girlfreind left me in my pickup truck - Country
my girlfreind left me in my pick up truck, and, my brother was driving - Blues

not that any of this means anything, just wanted to say it

anything by muddy waters, robert johnson, t-bone walker, j.l. hooker, and EC's From The Cradle album are all good starting points.

Free are also deceptively bluesy, check out The Hunter or Mr Big

there is a Hendrix album just called Blues - of course it is posthumous but includes many unreleased songs including hear my train a coming on a 12 string - it's fantastic - listen to the album and u will realise jimi was not a rock god, he was a blues giant, up there with muddy, bb, hooker etc.

srv is also excellent - he did a great deal to revive interest in blues music and was one helluva technically gifted guitarist.

hooker and waters and buddy guy are all great, but noone has mentioned t-bone walker, why? please please please buy his album 'stormy monday blues' - it was made in the 50's and is so ahead of it's time it is unreal - there are great blues songs on there which wouldn't sound out of place today - a bit like hendirx really, it just hasn't aged - i swear this album must be the beginnings of funk and acid jazz and i still cant believe it was written in the 50's.

listen to the blues and you will understand a lot more about other areas of popular music.

Many of the greats have already been mentioned, obviously those mentioned multiple times should tell you something ... T-Bone Walker, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson [the grandaddy of them all some say], Big Bill Broonzy ...

In addition some of my very favorites are Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Freddie King, Albert King, BB King (of course), Sonny Boy Willaims, Lightnin' Hopkins... Many CD's have various artists. You might try that to find out what you like the most.

I really love The Allman Brothers Band's early stuff before Duane left us. Some of the very best there are Stormy Monday Blues (one of the best guitar solos), Statsboro Blues, One Way Out, ...

In my opinion, any blues stuff from Clapton - Have You Ever Loved a Woman, Nobody Knows You When You're Down & Out, Key to the Highway ...

You'll find many of the songs are repeats from some of the old time
greats mentioned earlier.

Hope you find the blues to your liking - great stuff!

gary moore's still got the blues rocks. the main lick in it is very easy, but what about the solo thing, its the maddest ever.

Well, Hendrix's version had vocals, but Stevie's didn't. His was longer too. I dont really like one of them more than the other, they are both really good songs.

Okay here's some that haven't been mentioned:

Clarence Gatemouth Brown
Roy Buchanan
Jeff Healey

a couple cool songs to check out are...

"Suitcase Blues" by Triumph
"Deja Blues" by Michael Lee Firkins

In my opinion, some of the best blues jams are by Gary Moore ("Still Got The Blues" album, and "Story Of The Blues") and some of the Allman Brothers Band's early stuff (especially "Stormy Monday" on the Fillmore East album). Also, BB King's "Night Life" on the Live In London album is excellent. Mighty mighty tasty stuff indeed. Just remember, use your imagination when you play!

Clapton - From the Cradle and Slowhand
John Lee Hooker - The Healer
B.B. King - Live at the Regal
SRV - In Step

All these are eletric blues which should be an easier way in than via Robert Johnson or Mississippi John Hurt which are acoustic delta...

Freddie King- "Hideaway". The whole record is great instrumental blues.

I gotta second both Freddie King and the Allman Brothers!

Just did Hideaway on my guitar lesson last night!!! I've always loved that song, the way the tempo and mood chages about 3 times.

John Mayall & Bluesbreakers is a great blues album. Anything by Rory Gallagher is brilliant too. He was an Irish Hendrix in imo.

This thread is probably dead (sorry I'm new), but nobody mentioned Otis Rush and that is just unforgiveable.

And whoever said Jeff Healey needs to have my children. I walk right by his club several times a week, still can't believe he's blind =/

Jesus, this thread is sooo old. It seems I posted it about two years ago and it's still so high up on the list. Weird. Since posting it I've moved two times, graduated from school and even moved to another country. I know it's totally off-topic, but it's spooky that the thread is still here.
