I've played Yamaha acoustics that I've really liked and others that did nothing for me. I own a Yamaha AEX502 electric that I absolutely love. I paid $650 for it and wouldn't part with it for less than about $1400. It's also been discontinued and was only produced for a couple of years. The only problem I had with it was the jack was weak and had to be replaced. I find the necks on all their instruments to be quite good, I just don't like the tone of some of them.
I'd say be careful of buying an inexpensive guitar new. Take someone with you to checkout some used instruments that knows something about them, not a buddy that's been playing for 3 weeks or something. On the other hand, if you like your friends guitar you might be making a good choice. In the end it's not what other people think about your guitar, its what you think about it.

Well, among other things i play a Yamaha FG412-12 (the 12 string version of the fg412) and i love it! Obviously everyone has different brand tastes, but i cant fault yamahas - best entry/mid-level acoustics for a decent price as well. cant go wrong
