If you are talking about open position type chords, I find they all generally sound messy when played with distortion... A good thing to do would be to learn the triad shapes on all the strings: strings 1-2-3, 2-3-4, 3-4-5, 4-5-6... That way you can play all the triads all over the neck... Not saying that they will sound good, just that if you know them, you can try many different things, and find something that sounds good.

Yes, Zero was giving good advice about the triads. Work with those some, and you will probably find some very interesting chords (and maybe slip onto a melody;)).

Another thing I like to do (with distortion [not TOO heavy, mind you]) is play some open A(based)-shaped chords (Am, AmMajX etc.) without the fifth string (or the sixth of course).

They're easy to play, easy to remember, and some of them sound pretty good with distortion.

And they're a welcome off-ramp from power chords - they get so boring sometimes, but I still love 'em .
