So, today I went to a guitar store, to buy new strings and try out some effect pedals, but hmm... eventually I got myself a slide. The only problem is that I have no idea, how to use it. I don't even know any songs (or at least believe not to know) where a slide is used. So I would really appreciate any advice/tips about using this piece of metal. If you also could name me some songs where a slide is used, it'd be great. THNX.

You "wear" the slide on either your ring or pinky finger (which ever is most comfortable). Then mute BEHIND the slide to prevent tonics. You'll have to get the feel of playing with one, it takes a bit of touch. You'll have to be careful not to press the string to the fingerboard, you just "slide" across the string while you pick. As for songs, anything by Duane Allman is a great primer, or Johnny Winter also plays some mean slide. One of my favorites is "No Way Out" by the Allman brothers. Bonnie Raitt does some hot slide as well.... LOTS of great slide players out there.

Good luck

Uhm, Kirk Hammett from MetallicA uses one also in some of their numbers. If I'm not mistaking he uses it in "Wherever I may roam". try to look at the video. I know I have a video of them somewhere in my collection where he uses it. I'll try and look it up for you tonight when I'm at home. ( always fun to watch a Metallica vid.) But for now I'll keep it at "Wherever I may roam".

You are mistaken, he doesn't use it in wherever I may roam, he uses a wah pedal in whereever I may roam =]
He does however use a slide in the song Ain't My B*tch =]
And I'm sure he uses standard tuning as well

Well, I am a Metallica fan too, for 10 years now, but I figure you still can make mistakes. I was just guessing from my memory anyway and I thought I saw it on 1 year and a half ITLOM but it probably was Cunning stunts then. I'll look it up when I find the time.

one thing I omitted was using a slide you also need to look into "open" tunings of your guitar. this is the best was to really get the feel of it. And another thing the song title is "One Way Out", I'm suprised someone didn't rip me on that. Jimmy Page does some slide work on the first 3 albums as well.

I have been playing slide for a wopping 5-6 months now so don't take much that I say to heart. But, as already stated, open tunings are the best sounding. I have been working on mostly blues music as slide seems to be used most commonly there. Artists such as: Muddy Waters, Keb Mo, Johnny Winter, John Hammond, John Lee Hooker and Kelly Joe Phelps to name a few. Tons of tab is available on the web so search all ya want.
Oh ya, one thing about using slide......it only takes a slight touch of the slide to the strings. Just hit one string and slide across it...When you get it right you will know. I hope this has helped some
