I recently bought myself a plectrum made from metall, and I wonder wether it will damage the strings faster than a plastic pic. I hope not, because the guitar sounds much better when I pick the strings with it.

I believre that they do. They do not bend, sop you end up breaking strings quicker.
I use a stone pick. Of course hard, thick picks will damage the strings more than .73mm plastic pick, but to my mind the additional wearage is rather neglectable. It may depend on your style/technique so try out yourself...
personally, I like "hard" picks more than that plastic stuff :)

i used to play with a metal pick alot.
but it was shredding strings at a rate i couldn't afford
so i switched to .45mm plastic picks :)
