Just listening to Hotel California the other day got me thinking. Do people like listening to long solos or do you think, like a freind of mine, that its just guitar for guitars sake?
I love 'em and here are a few of my faves
1. I Am The Ressurrection-The Stone Roses
2. Sultans Of Swing-Dire Straits
3. Love Is The Law-The Seahorses
I was just curious if it was something for guitar players only because they allways cut them off on the radio.
Let me know if you like them or not and tell me some of your favorites.

Hmm...well, I'd say that too long solos can get boring. It's especially the case of live CDs. I've got an album called BBC Sessions by Led Zep, and there is a 18 min long version of dazed and confused with a 10-minute solo. It's too long. I mean, if I saw that concert live, I probably would like it, but just listening to it...it's just too long. But maybe I'm too rythm-guitar orientated to understand it...

Yeah I agree, live tracks can be a bit long if youre not actually there in person, with exceptions of course, eg:12 minute voodoo chile at woodstock.
But what about albums? Would it spoil an album if there were a few long solos on there, having to keep fast forwarding through them every time?

it all depends. Coz sometimes in the case of Joe Satriani, he solos to sings. Even tho he has tried singing.... he just aint good. That's also like Steve Vai and all those other instrumentalists.

I like the 18 minute version of Heaven and Hell/Sign Of the Southern Cross/Heaven and Hell (continued) from Black Sabbath's Live Evil album. the solos are pretty sweet. I also like the 8 minute live solo from John Petrucci on Once in A Live Time. And the Randy Rhoads solo in Suicide Solution (tribute album) Rocks. Cant forget "A Change of Seasons" by Dream theater.

i dont have enough room to put them all down. there are so many long solos and jams that phish do. sometimes i wonder if trey the guitarist from phish is of this earth.

Hey, can you recommend a good phish starting album for someone who's never heard anything by them. Ive heard good things said about them(mainly on here) and think I might enjoy them.
Also do you know of anywhere that I can download a sample of what they sound like? (a couple of short clips) just to be sure I like them.
Thanks.

my advice is dont listen to just a sample cuz every one of there songs is diferent.........one song cant define them........check out phish llive from the hamptons thats a good beginneer set to check out and also check out some phish related websites to read up about the band............and keep an open mind when listening to them it took me six months before i understood what the hell there music was about and what they are pulling off.......it has changed the way i play and i look at music its that deep have fun with it.......
