View Full Version : Moving to a new instrument

Hi I was just wondering if playing guitar would give you any kind of a head start if you wanted to start playing piano, cause I was thinking of getting a starter keyboard but don't know if I would have the extra time to put alot of practise into both instruments. And if there is any one reading this that can already play both just out of curiosity which do you think is harder to learn.

idk about guitar to piano, i played piano back in the day and its helped my guitar playing, it really helped my ear out a lot. my ear is a lot better than i think it would be if i hadnt played piano
BassTallica

actually its the opposite.. the piano will help ya get ready for ANY instrument...not the other way around

yeah, I agree. I started out playing piano in Jr. High school 16 years ago. I only played that for a few years but it really helped out when i started playing guitar in high school. Even now, the piano is great for writing songs.

yeah i plan on taking up the piano again, then write some piano parts to some of my slower, softer songs (one in particular.) then if i can learn how to play drums, im set to write all my own original stuff. too bad it would be kinda hard to play all that live...

yeah, that'd be tough to pull off live, haha. Have you or anyone here ever used a Boomerang pedal? It's the one that you can record a riff or whatever then loop it to solo over? My drummer is thinking of getting one to mix his drumming and percussion (congas, bongos, timbale, etc). I thought it would be ok to have one too, put my rhythm track down live in a verse section or whatever then play it back as a loop to play leads and solo over in a live situation. Just curious if anybody has every used one and if they were worth the couple hundred bucks.

never tried one but now i wanna try one out sometime. it seems a lot better than finding a rythym guitarist.

his answer will be guitar ... piano is a piece of cake

i think piano is harder. when your playing guitar, both hands are working together. on the piano, your 2 hands can be doing to completely different things, working totally separately.

The Boomerang seems like a real nice replacement for a rhythm guitarist. which means band money gets split fewer ways, haha. And as far as which is easier to learn quick... I'd say piano is easier. All your sharps are the black keys so all the white keys are natural notes. Just my opinion.

Well I play piano, guitar, French horn/flugelhorn, organ, trumpet/cornet, baritone/euphonium, and violin.
I'd have to say that the piano is the bigbossdaddy of all instruments, and probably the best to start on (which I unfortunately did not).
If you learn piano first and THEN guitar you will understand SOOO much more about BOTH. Then after you work with the guitar for a good while, you will better understand the intervals for piano and relate it to counting frets.
I would definitely suggest learning piano first. And make sure you get a keyboard with a METRONOME!
If you want to play guitar first, however, it IS much easier to just play and make music on and it is MUCH more fun (piano takes a lot of work :D) at the beginning.
Piano is a lot harder to play IMO. After you get past the old left-hand-chords right-hand-melody thing and start playing Bach and stuff, I would say it is probably the hardest instrument in the world. Coordination must be sharp and instant at that point.
It's kind of difficult to judge which instrument is basically the hardest to master, though. The guitar will never require as much coordination and dexterity and muscle memory as the piano will, but the guitar is a uniquely-played instrument with its own little quirks. Organ is harder than both, though :D.
Anyway, my point, again, is I believe it is better to learn piano first and guitar later.

Well, let's see. It's hard for me to answer stuff in a decent order cause I rant a lot ;). First of all, I'm 16.
I have been teaching myself piano and playing by ear since the 2nd grade, but I've recently started taking lessons on piano (3 years now) and organ (1 year [I can RIP on that thing :D ]). In 4th grade, I started playing trumpet/cornet in the 4th grade band. Played trumpet officially for two years, switched to baritone/euphonium in the 6th grade. I played baritone/euphonium until the 9th grade when I switched to French horn (the Horn of Satan ;) ) which was kinda backwards if you've ever seen a baritone mouthpiece vs. a F. horn mouthpiece. I'm in 11th this year (after this summer) btw. Two years ago, my dad gave me his violin because he doesn't ever play it anymore. I can't read a note or play a song on it, but I can play with just about anything by ear. Probably should find someone who can give me lessons. My dad gave me an Ibanez acoustic about a year ago, and just these past couple of months, I've been really practicing seriously on guitar (have a Squier Sub-Sonic "X" ;) now). And that's the story of my life. I hardly do anything but practice if I'm not on my comp cause I have a LOT of stuff to practice, heh.
Ooohhhh favorite instrument. Well can't say I have a favorite. I like the way guitar is played. Organ is a good fun challenge. It's like flying a helicopter, you know. Patting your head with one hand, rubbing your belly with the other and riding a unicycle with one leg and spinning rings on the other leg :D (btw, listen to Bach - Toccata and Fugue in D minor ;) ). Piano is just fun to mash ;). Baritone/euphonium is fun to play. French horn is evil, so evil. And of, course who doesn't like to solo on a trumpet? Violin is not really that great to me, cause if you're a millimeter off, the sound is like AGGGHH. But they're all fun to play.

lol! actually piano is like the easyest instrument!
its easyer than guitar for many things, like:
1. You can never get that noise you get when you hit the middle between 2 frets, or when you hit a fret not hard enough
2.you almost dont need any strength at all to push down a piano key,
fretting is MUCH harder
3.Classical guitar music many times uses a melody and a bassline - so you do play 2 different things in both hands...
just to name a few--- and btw if somebody said this alredy srry cuz i only read first page - too lazxy to go on. cya

idk about everyoen else, ive played both instruments, and in my humble opinion, piano is harder to play. i played piano for a little over three years, and in less than 2 years of guitar, im much further along (altho thats probably from just having prior musical experience.)
i can still play some stuff on the piano, but not too much. idk who else here has experience with both instruments, but thats my opinion and im sticking to it.

i've only played piano once or twice. but i know that flute is easier than guitar. i picked it up a lot faster than i have guitar. maybe i just have more talent for flute.

Yeah, I have to agree. Coco is talking about fretting like it is something you really think about after the first stages of guitar. I agree that classical method guitar is a very challenging method, but I've never seen a guitarist play double melody lines with chords. I've also never seen a guitarist play a melody and counter-melody at the same time while backing with support chords.
Sure, the average guitarist can play much faster than the average pianist and all that, but the force required to play a piano is immense compared to the guitar. I really cannot believe that someone says that the piano is in the run for the easiest instrument. I've played the piano extensively for about 7-8 years, and I'm still considered to be a mid-amateur in skill. IMO, it would be much easier to be a virtuoso guitarist than a virtuoso pianist. I have become very good at especially the baritone/euphonium and have even played in several professional orchestras before (with pay ;)), and IMO it is the easiest instrument that I play. The piano is a polyphonic instrument which makes it automatically nowhere near the easiest instrument.
All of above is strictly my opinion, though. I do not mean to insult or offend anyone, so plz don't flame me.

I've heard that guitar is hardest to learn but easiest to play once you get good at it, but piano is the easist to learn but hardest to play once you get good.

Don't believe everything you hear.
In my experience, the piano is much harder to learn than the guitar. And it is certainly not easy to play once you get good at it. As you progress with a piano the music is harder and completely different from anything you've ever played before. This is basically how it is with all instruments.
If you meant that it's easier to play stuff you already know, well sure - that's how it is with everything.
And, in my view, 'good' is a very relative term because there's always 'better'.

you are 100% wrong. one reason which the guitar is so popular in all forms of music is that its one of the easiest instruments to learn a basic knowledge of but is nearly impossible to master.

i think piano really is harder to play, and once u get into more advanced stuff, it gets even harder than guitar. beginner piano songs are harder than beginner guitar songs imo.

Well it kind of depends I would say. I know a little about piano, andI play guitar for a while. See the think about piano is it covers a huge range compared to guitar, and you hit kets not really frets. In my opinion learning piano would more benifit your guitar then the guitar beneifitng your piano. Though they are close it would help you reading music and thigns liek that.
