judging by your sig I guess you'd like to master RHCP - Aeroplane. It's got a bass solo but the verse and chorus stuff doesn't look too easy either.

ok challenging bass songs

chili peppers:
higherground
around the world
by the way (kind its hard the first time)

metallica:
dyers eve
battery
pulling teeth

sabbath:
war pigs
iron man (the end when it gets fast can be wicked if ya play with your fingers)

well those were challenging for me when i first attempted them.. s few still are.. have fun

As for playing with the fingers (and not a pick), I think Steve Harris from Iron Maiden has some rather challenging songs. Dude is fast!! One of my favorite songs is "Phantom of the Opera". I think Steve Harris is one bass player who has gone unnoticed. He writes most of Maidens songs, and is one heck of a bass player.

He is one of those that just plays what he feels is right..."Scales? I don't know what scales are"!!

Again, he is the main reason I play a Fender Precision, with Rotosound Roundwound strings (at least he used to). I kinda gave up on Maiden after Powerslave. They seemed to loose their edge after that.

But he is a killer bass player. Fast with the picking fingers. And quit unique in his style.

Agreed. He plays as fast as the guitar a lot of times, and he can really rip on some stuff. I saw a video of Number of the Beast one time and that guy was flying, and I noticed he was playing the bass and was like 'DUDE'.

I've seen Maiden live a couple times, back around Powerslave and such. You can't even see his right hand!!!!!!! It's just a blur...in person!!!!

Les Claypoole from Primus plays some challenging basslines, Bootsy Collins (from P-Funk and James Brown) plays some sick bass too. Or Victor Wooten who is one of the best bass players ever. And pretty much anything from the earlier Chili Peppers albums should be challenging. And last but not least Jaco Pasorious !

I disagree with most of you, higher ground nt; difficult at all and i'm 13 years old, neither is give it away or aeound th world, i would say really hard bass lines are my Matt Freeman(rancid/operation ivy) He has really hard songs that he writes, the solos are sick, like MAXWELL MURDER or AXIOM those are really hard, i can almost play MAXWELL MURDER, hois songs are kind os dificult, really ther solos are and most of the solos are just arpegios with doub;led notes going up and down really fast all over the fretboard, red hot chili peppers have ok hard songs, they just have a bassplayer that blends in different with the rest of the band then other bass player do like tom cammerforn from rage.

Learn some AFI songs, their bassist plays some pretty cool stuff.

The Lost Souls and Sacrifice Theory are good ones.

tool's songs are challenging at first, then get easy. i've been playing bass seriously for only 5 months or less. been playing guitar for 9 months. i use each to compliment the other so i get better at both. the cool thing about tool's songs are the bass riffs and the guitar are near identical, learn one oyu can figure out the other. i love those guys. a good song for stretching before getting serious is tool's 46 and 2. not too hard but fun as hell. then play it on guitar. if you play long enough changing between bass and guitar you get a nice forearm workout.

On the matter of the timing,

G----------------------
D------2-------5-----7-
A----------------------
E--0-0---0-3-3---5-5---
|_|_|_| |_|_| |_|_|
3 3

The first four are straight 8th notes, then the two sets of three are triplets.

As far as fingering goes I don't play bass so I couldn't tell you. :)

yea thats the best way to say it...

as for fingering personally i use my pointer finger for the D2 and then my pointer for the E3's adn E5's and my ring finger for teh D5's adn D7's... its all on how you feel comfortable.. i know bassists who use their pinkeys.. or just use their pointer finger for all the notes

Whgat i do is i slap the notes on the e string and po the others , and i use my pointer for the first note and all the notes on the e string and my ring on the notes on the d string.i find it easier that way
