I am going to make a psychic prediction as to where you are coming from on this, and correct me if I am wrong :)
You were going through the basic 44 strumming lesson, and for the 1st strum pattern I have a song simile that I called "A horse named bob"....which is really "horse with no name" by America". There is a chord called D69/F#. There is a chord chart for this chord......in which the numbers underneath are 2X0300. But here is the catcher. You played the chord with the note on the 3rd fret on the 3rd string and it sounded awful.
Here is the link to that page.

That is a standard chord chart in which the graphic tells you were to put your fingers, and the numbers underneath tell you what finger to use (not what frets to play).
In the world of text tabs found on the Internet, a chord is sometimes represented by a row of numbers. Those numbers do indicated the frets to play on. A D69/F# would be written 2X0200.....so these are the frets to play, and the string go from 6th to 1st....left to right. There is not a fingering indicated, just the frets.
So the fingering that you are seeing on that page under the standard chord chart is 2X0300...that is only telling you what fingers to use. where to put your finger is represented in the graphic.
I get a lot of questions about those numbers under the chord charts........actually I just get a lot of people telling me that I have a mistake on my site, and that I should fix it...haha. I think a lot of guitar players get a guitar, learn to read tabs, and that is how they learn all of their chord at first. So they are only familiar with that text tab chord chart format. Then when they do see a standard chord chart, they look at the numbers as if they were the same as that text tab format. But now you know that they are not the same.
Here is a lesson on how to read standard chord charts.

Should I get a job with the physic friends network, or just keep my day job as a guitar teacher? :D
