View Full Version : Open Tuning thoughts...

I was just explaining to someone about open guitar tunings and I got to thinking (uh oh)... Wouldn't it make more sense to tune to open minor chords instead of open major chords.

For Example:

Open D = D-A-D-F#-A-D

Open Dm = D-A-D-F-A-D

Now, playing through the chords in the scale:

D - 000100
Em - 222222
F#m - 444444
G - 555655
A - 777877
Bm - 999999
C#Dim - this one would be hard, but no one uses the 7th chord, practically, but for posterity's sake - 11-10-11-11-11-10-11

So by tuning to an open minor chord, it is much easier to play all the chord in the major scale, and not just the 1,4,5.

If I'm crazy, go ahead and call me out, but its late, and I'm tired, and strikingly that's when most of my inspiration comes...lol

Just looking to see what anyone thinks about that.

The most common use for open tunings is slide playing, so it really depends what key you're in and what sound you need/want.

If you were using open tunings to make chords easer to play then yeah I guess it does make more sense.

I just use open tunings to play slide. Ive never moved them all to minor, I will have to try this. I've got my list of tunings from bigcitystring.com/tunings.

U pick which stringed instrument. Guitar I have 20 printed out.
That one you named off it actually on that list. Any good songs you know actually use that?

The opend Dm you got there works fine with slide. I just bought one and tried to tune my guitar into more bluesy tune and accidentally tuned it into open Dm. It's so blue.

Yeah, D minor's the saddest of all keys.

that one seems pretty hard, since u have to fret all 7 strings on a 6 string guitar... ;)
