I have been considering getting something to record my music on and then probably transfer it to my computer to send to my friends for critique, but I am relatively poor and I have ZERO knowledge of starter level recording equipment, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hmm well if you have little knowlege about recording, then anything I list will probably be too much for you to handle. The only thing I can think you would be able to use fairly easily would be like a Tascam 4 track tape recorder/mixer. It won't give you the best audio results, but it works. To run it into your computer, just simply take the stereo out from the 4 track into your comp's line in. I have done that and the quality was pretty good.

or you could simply record straight to your computer. You can use sound recorder (this is for windows btw) or for the best results you could fork out some dough and get cakewalk or cooledit.
I've heard sum tascam stuff, and it sounds alright.
But anyway, if you have no recording knowledge, then learn! =] I started out on sound reacorder learning how to mix tracks and stuff, and I still use it (only coz I can't afford cakewalk or cooledit) and I can get some alright results.

I have a friend that has a Yamaha MD-8. Which is a 12 track mixer w/ an 8 track minidisc recorder onboard. It does CD quality recording, and you can bounce tracks down to allow more to be recorded. It's great. It's a bit complex for a beginner, but if you don't mind learning I'd say spend the thousand bucks for versatility and sound quality!
