depends on the acidity of your sweat....
some people can corrode a set of strings in one night....and they really need to change quite often....and at least clean them off every time they play.....
other people....like me....hardly sweat...but there is still oils on your fingers.....the strings will get nasty....but much slower....
i have hardly changed my strings....but im sure i waited too long....i noticed a huge difference when i did....
id say a year is too long for anybody....but if you dont have that corrosion problem....maybe every month isnt necessary....im thinkin from now on im going to change every 3 to 4 months.....some might think this is still too long between changes....but i dont practice as often as alot of people do either....

I have found boiling my strings will clean them up abit.It also doesn't hurt to wash them with a mild dish detergent, somthing that cuts grease.

I'm gonna put in my two cents worth in here. That is a tricky question with no simple answer. some of the factors to consider are: string gauge, style (how much do I bend, for example), Type of guitar (electric, acoustic.... ), string type (nylon, steel), how much I play, how bad do I sweat, string manufacturer.... I use the rule of thumb of changing strings about every 40 - 50 hours of playing. I've found that if I go way beyond that the strings will lose their tone and sound dull as I play. This may not be true for you, you may get 60-70 hours out of them I couldn't say. Strings are cheap (only a coupla bucks a set) and only take a few minutes to change, so why fight it? Take the time and spend the bucks to put on new strings don't wait a year between changes, you'll be glad you did. One more thing the stings that came on your guitar probably aren't the best strings, get some new ones.

i usually play for around 3-4 hours a day minimum (if im in the house all day with nothing to do then i can easilly slip into double figures) and replace my strings once every 2 weeks.
im just strange like that, i love my strings to be in absolutely perfect condition.
plus i play ernie ball custom guage (9's) which are, as you would expect, not quite as strong as 10 guage upwards, so if i dont replace em i snap em anyway haha

well I play heaps
I find that once I buy a new set of strings, I fall in love with them (coz they sound sooo nice new =]) and I dont wanna change them for ages. Coz then I have to go through that whole set up again and I have to get used to the strings and blah. BUT I reccomend changing every month, just as a small rule of thumb
