chords fingerstyle

I've been working on dream on by aerosmith...my guitar teacher told me to do it fingerstyle. for the chorus part I have to do chords. after a while, my thumb starts to hurt. am I supposed to do the chords with my thumb, or another finger?:confused:

You could use hybrid picking, which is where you use your pick and fingers, for the verse, then just use your pick during the chorus.
The hybrid picking sounds a lot like straight fingerpicking, but offers the convinience of having a pick in your hand when you need it.

You can also just fingerstrum, just like regular strumming but without a pick in your fingers. Use the tip of your index fingernail on the downstroke and the side of your thum on the upstroke. It works pretty well.
