Okay...another question while I'm at it. The stings my acousitc guitar came with are big nasty logs-- .012. I've been told they sound better than thinner strings, and that if I can manage to play on them, I will be doing myself a favor in the long run by building finger strength. Truth? Should I stick with them? I'm almost ready to replace them, and I'm on the fence about whether or not I should buy lighter ones.

Thanks!

im not sure if it would make a difference -
you would build up callous skin on your fingers eventually anyway
if you want to build up finger strength buy finger weights.
that helps a bit.

its completely up to you what strings you play with, whatever you prefer.

personally i use ernie ball custom slinky 9's - thinnest of the thin, because they suit my style of playing - i use alot of wild bends etc so thinner strings are better for me

On the other hand, i prefer the logs:D i DO think they sound better, so this just goes to emphasize what the guys said, its a personal choice. Try different strings and see what goes better for you.

well seeing as you said accoustic, yeh I'd go with the .12's,
they're not actually too big compared with others I've seen.
Yeh they'll help build finger strength, but do what's comfortable and do what you want

Fatter strings give more punch and volume. I use thin and turn up the volume.

if your "logs" hurt put on some lighter strings... it's that simple. keep in mind lighter strings have a larger vibration pattern the heavier stings do, so if you go too light they might give you some buzzing, also you may have the stings ride too deep in the grooves in the saddle and nut so you may get buzzing from there as well. if you don't pick up any buzzing your golden!! my advise is to take your time and work up to a heavier sting. you'll be glad you did.

Yeah, the 12's sounded better, but I'm a lot less frustrated by the 10's. I'll stick with these for a while and work my way back up to 12's over time.
