Uhm, you'll need a guitar and this site, most self teaching material is here I think. Also, the best way learning is searching for some tablature by a band you like and try to play it along

You can always buy some beginners books, you'll should find those wherever you bought your guitar from.
but i think this site helped me much more than any book i bought. its got everything, and its illustrated too....
and if youre stuck anywhere, u can ask questions on this forum and you'll get proper assistance.....what more do you need?:)
Playing tabs of songs you like will be fun,and learning chords and scales and names of notes etc is very helpful...this is my opinion and this is how i went to learn to play...so good luck!

The explanations are excellent--very precisely worded--there are lots of diagrams, and each chapter has a quiz section at the end to make you think about the material you read.

I have been giving lessons for some time now... the first two thing I teach are: 1) proper mechanics 2) relaxation. Both of these you should be able to learn how to do around here. These 2 things are critical in learning how to play. After that I like to teach some basic techniques 1) strum 2) the 7 1st position chords 3) major and minor scales 4) exercises 5) a song. At the same time I would learn how to read sheet music and tab. I know all of these you can find on this site. After that I believe you best bet is to learn songs and take the on-line lessons here. That should keep you busy for the next two months. If you need more things to do, you have alot more free time than I do.
DON'T GIVE UP!!!!

I forgot to mention one very important thing: commit the 1st position note to rote memory
