How do modes go with major scale degrees?

I was reading one of the articles about modes/scales on this site. I ran across something that really hinted at what I need to know, It hinted that in any given key, say F, each of the seven modes have a certain degree. For example, say the Ionian Mode corresponded to the first degree of itself, you would play the F Ionian Scale. And if you have a 1-4-5 proggression to improvise over, you would use the scales that correspond to those degrees of the scales to solo over them. So basically what I'm asking for is a list of which modes go with which degrees of the major scale. Thanks for any help!:D
