My harmonics really chimed best when i use the bridge pickup, and i have just enough overdrive to sustain the note but not scramble it.
About the guitar i personally would get a american fender strat. However that is me personally.

I thought those american fender strats were quite expensive nowadays, because all strats are made in mexico since approx. '95, but hey if you can get one...
Also a good guitar is an Ibanez RG series. but that is of course my opninion.

im not 100% sure but you should be able to pick up a re-issue or mexican built fender jaguar for that kinda money.
im sorta bias in that its my favourite guitar ever, but who knows you might like it. :)

Strats are still made in the USA, the Mexican strats are the 50's & 60's Classics and a few others like the Tom Delonge and all the parts are made in the USA for these they are just assembled in Mexico.
As a proud owner of a Mexican Strat I can recomend them mine plays as well as any USA that I have come across

Get an amp with heaps of distortion =]]]]]
I just got a new amp yesterday, it has mind blowing overdrive, and crisp clean, its soooo nice =]
its an Ashton GA 100
and the guitar you should get should be something like an Ibanez RG series guitar, or GRX. Maybe also an ESP.
