uhm..
a metronome is a device that gives you a constant beat, either visually (blinking lights, whatever) or through audio (clicking tone, etc..) You can usually select the beat, between 30 beats per minute and 200 bpm are common ranges.
The metronome may either work electronically (with a quarz crystal) or mechanically with a pendulum (is that an English word? :) ).

For playing the guitar, you need not have a very loud metronom, however, if you also play other, louder instruments you may consider getting a metronome that has a louder output and/or visual output.

Personally, I'm using a "Seiko Digital Metronome DM-11 professional" for my guitar practice which is only about the size of a credit card and less than an inch high, battery operated and adjustable from 30 to 250 beats minute. It costs about 35 Euro (if I can already calculate with the new currency!). It also has an optical output (blinking spaces on the screen) and fits in your pocket!
For the piano, I have an antique metronome with a pendulum which my father used to use when he was young. I don't like those much, they look cool, but are hard to transport and getting exactly the beat you want by adjusting the position of that weight on the pendulum is rather difficult (physically :))
