View Full Version : 9th Fret Prolems...
Hey,
I just bought a guitar like 2 months ago- a Squier Affinity Start....I know its crap but for a beginner - its good enough.
Anyways - since like a week ago - my 9th fret start making problems - but only on the 4th String (D String)... so i started researching and the only thing i found was Re-Fretting - but thats when all the fret is ruined....
You see- when i play the D string on the 9th fret it sounds somewhat dead....ive already tried to tune a thousnad times and ive tried to replace the string....it still sounds dead... although all the other string sound perfectly ok on the 9th fret.
So what should i do?
Thanks,
Michael.

Hi,
I think this might be a problem with the action being too low. I dont know how much you know about giutars if your a beginer, but when I started I had no idea what things like action were, so let me explain. The action is the distace between the strings and the frets. If this distance is too short the string will vibrate against the frets and deaden it. The way to raise the action is by turning an allen key on something called the bridge saddles(fairly accurate description).
I hope that helps, if not I've just wasted my time:D
Let me know how you get on.
ps. check this out for some guitar mantenence tips

Hey,
Thanks for the reply.
As a matter affect - ive already tried that....i spent like an hour trying to lower the string and the mak it higher- but unfrotuantely it doesnt help..
Thanks though.
Michael.

my bro had an almost identical problem with his squier affinity strat about 3/4weeks ago - the pickups were sitting unusually high, and when i screwed them further into the guitar the problem ceased to exist.
im no guitar tech, and so i dunno what kinda effect this has on the guitar etc (i only play the bloody things haha) in fact im amazingly ignorant about that kinda thing, and at the time i couldnt get my head round why pickup height should effect the clarity of sound at one fret. in the end i came to the conclusion that i must've hit/knocked etc something else while messing with the pickups. so to test, i unscrewed the pickups carefully backto their original height, and.... the problem re-apeared. strange i know, but either way it cured my bro's.
despite this my first guess would've been that the action is too low, but then if you've already adjusted the string height....

Dude, why dont you just go to the music store and ask them what they reccomend
Yea i would have went to the music store- but you see its far from myplace.... and im too lazy to carry my gutiar - LOL....
anyways my guitar is sooo weird ... i mean it sucks....first my high E string keeps on off-tuning it self...and when i tuned it back it just snappes....i had to buy like 5 high e strings...
the second problem that i had was the little screw - you know - where you plug in the cable....it kept on un-scrrewing it self... and i messed with it and ruined it compltely...
then the screwes that hold the piece of metal- where the cable connects....just snapped out.
and now this.
JEEZ i paid like 250 dollars for the Strat pack....i dont expect for a lot...but still...
anyways ill take it to the music store tomorrow.
Thanks,
Michael.
