Help on improvising solos

Can anyone give me some tips on soloing. I've wrote a few songs but I mostly play all rhythm. I want to start gettin more into lead guitar. I can come up with a half decent solo but it takes me awhile to figure out what notes to use. Im looking to be able to solo off the top of my head with a drummer. I would appreciate any help.

First of all, learn you scales. Major, minor, and pentatonic especially. By able to play them in any key in all postions. Next, know chord arpegios and the relative majors/minor of what you playing along with. If you alread know all that, try reading the suggestions in this thread:
