i'm looking for a first electric guitar and come across this two: the squier stratocaster standard and the Ibanez GRX20Z
without considering their prices, which one is better for a first electric guitar?

From what i know,Ibanez..everything i hear about a squier is discouraging. i probably shouldnt judge from what i hear but im pretty sure everyone will tell u to go for Ibanez..
Hopefully someone who knows more will tell you why..:)

as i keep saying its completely down to personal choice, whatever plays and feels best.
ibanez have the better image, but i personally feel more at home on a squier (i learnt to play on a Squier standard stratocaster).
i think there are problems with the squier affinity strat (had one, and the pickups are pretty poor) but the standard strat is a good instrument, regardless of what people say.
plus they're indestructable :) believe me ive tried

Yes, Squiers are pretty tough. I smashed one once and it took a few blows to the concrete to make anything break. The first thing to break off was the fret board, then the body broke, the neck joint never came apart... I fully expected it to come apart first!
But w/ that said I would still recommend the Ibanez. I have never tried to smash an Ibanez, but if you take care of it, you shouldn't have to find out how well it takes serious abuse. The ibanez is superior in quality and tone.

Ibanez!!!!!
Yeh I'd go for the GRX series or RG series. Never played a GRX but they look similar to the RG series. I myself have an RG, and the pickups are NICE as!!!!!

Defenitaly Ibanez. It's a good quality pickups, and the fretboard is rather easy to play too. So go with that.

I have a Ibanez GRX20 Left Handed. It is pretty good. I havnt played any other guitar, as nothing alse was in my price range. But I like it, Ibanez does make better guitars than squier though, so that is one thing to think about.
Well my first guitar was an Ibanez but i never gave guitar a desent go. I'm giving it another go now and this time I have a Squire. Personally i think the Squire feels better and seems more user friendly. But like everyone else said it really depends feels good for you. One thing i will say is that i had heard a lot of Squires are a bit dodgy and you have to hope you get a good one. So that could account for the "love them or hate them" attitude people have in regard to Squires. Mine seems fine but you never know what you'll get.

Maybe the new Burns Brian May signature is something for you, it is an acceptable price and the quality is very high for that price, also, it is signed by Brian May of course;) and you can get a very varied sound out of it. ( as long as you know which button to change.)

Go for the Ibanez. Have you played an RG 170 or a GAX 70? If you're lucky, you can find each one for about $200 US. They are great guitars with great tone and sustain for a very good price.
I've played an RG 170 for several years, and it sounds great. It's very durable also. I play it every other day in jazz band (has yet to fail) and it gives me that nice "fat" sound because of the neck humbucker. The neck is thin and easy to play on with jumbo frets.

Right. All Ibanez guitars are pretty nice. Esdpecially the RG. For a matter of fact, the next guitar I am getting is a RG470 Left Handed.
