as soon as i was comfortable with power chords and such, i went and learned a bunch of easy songs. i popped in the "international superhits" cd from green day and learned it all the way through. a lot of green day and blink stuff is really easy to figure out, thats what i started with and i havent really had a problem.
however, i did have experience in music prior to the guitar, i used to play the piano (almost 3 years before i had to quit, didnt have the time anymore) but that really helped me out i think.

If you have another guitar player to play with, have them play a chrode, and try to guess what it is, once you got that down, haev them play 3 chordes and try to figure it out. and so on.

Figure out what interval familiar melodies begin with...
some examples:
m2nd - the Pink Panther cartoon theme (Yngwie's "Anguish And Fear")
2nd - Happy Birthday To You (another is Santana's "Sambi Pa Ti")
m3rd - Stairway To Heaven,Jingle Bells,O Holy Night etc.
3rd - the Simpson's theme
P4th - Here Comes The Bride
P5th - Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
etc.

If you really wnated to get good at ear training I would suggest buying a music theory book or going online or somehweret o find lessons for doing that. You can learn intravals and such by using other song names liek the last poster said but they sound different assending then decending. Books clearly explaion that for you. Jusrt practice alot and it willcome to you. There are also many tyricks to learn scales by ear. What type what mode and such.
