its basically a hammer-on with the index or middle fingers on your picking hand. when you do tap, make sure instead of just pulling off of the string, pull it a little bit like you do a regular hammer-on, kinda like a pluck i guess. if you just pull straight off, itll deaden the song.
to be able to do it well, itll take some practice, as with anything else. you might be doing it right for all i know, you just havent had enough practice to make it sound really good.
Well I'm harfly a tapping expert... but when you are doing the actual tappping with your one finger at the high fret, try not to so much hammer on, as use your finger as a pick. I do a somewhat circular motion starting at the top of the string and plucking it as I'm hammering it down. You do have to make sure that the string goes down otherwise the note at the highest fret won't tring, just make sure that you 'pick' the string slightly as well to add volume as well and make the subsequent pullofs and hammerings sound more.

Here is a link to a lesson on tapping that uses the song Eruption.

It goes into fairly good depth about how to tap-on and how to use tapping. If nothting else, there is a video demonstartion (at low and high speeds) to demostrate tapping.

Try using the side of the pick to tap in order to get a slightly sharper sound

Play a series of hammerons and pulloffs with just your left hand. Kind of like a slow (or fast if you're in the mood) trill. Somewhere nice and comfortable. Say alternating between the 9th and 12th frets on the high E string. You'd be using your first finger on the 9th fret, and your pinky on the 12th fret. If your pinky's not up to it, use your third finger on the 11th fret.
Anyway. Keep your right hand out of the equation and just let your left hand generate some sound out of the hammerons and pulloffs. Make sure both notes are sounding nice and clearly. Now look closely at what your pinky (or third finger) is doing. That's what you want the first or second finger of your right hand to do when you do a two handed tapping thing. The only difference is that you'd be sliding your finger off the string in the direction of the ceiling instead of the floor when using your right hand.
