I have been playing a 4 string bass for 15years never thought much about a 5 string a month ago my wife bought me a 5 string washburn cool bass I know the strings heavy B what I would like to know is some exercises that would help me get used to working with and around it. I tend to climb up on the B thinking its the E when playing.

yea when i first got my 5 stringer i would always jump to the top string thinking it was the E... if ya play alot of songs that consist of almost everything being on the E sting ::cough:: metallica ::cough:: the ya get use to knowing were it is and that there is an extra string on top.... also ya get a little more comfortable if ya play with the lower 4 strings B E A D alot and forget about the G string for a while.. then later ya can throw in some practice with the G string cause that one is always at the bottom and ya already know were it is.... basically practice makes perfect

The guy from MuDvAyNe uses a five string bass for some songs, and from what I've seen they look pretty complex...

KoRn of course only uses the 5th string, even though he sucx (fieldy the bassist not the band i like KoRn) ne ways just get used to playing it like the 5th string wasnt there, only use the B if u MUST, it makes everything sound bad if u use it too much, dont get me wrong i own only 5 strings but i only hit that string like 5-6 times per song at the most. just pretend the string is not there until you need it

I had some navigation trouble as well going from 4 to 5 string but I just perservered and the trouble went away. One of the biggest problems was (as mentioned in some of the other posts) that with the brand new novelty "the B String" I tended to play it alot and this made my bassline constructions real muddy and low. After a time I played it less until now I play it sparsely compared to the other strings and the more sparsely it's used, the more effect it has.
The B string is great where you are building up the dynamics of the song and if a bass run takes you down past (say G on the E string ) you just keep going down and octave off the B string to A string for effect and it sounds great ( for the music I play anyhow ).
Just keep at it and the navigation problems will go away - tell you what, once you get really used to a 5 str. you won't want to go back to a 4 str.
