Well best bands would have to go to

Dream Theater & Liquid Tension Experiment
Pantera
Metallica
Meshuggah
Tool
Opeth
Ozzy
Primus
Slayer

And so many more I can't name them all.

I am basing these bands off talent... not how many CDs they sell and how many people attend their concerts. I would have to totally disagree with what you listed though... as talent goes.

The greatest rock band ever:
AC/DC (the definition of rock)

another good ones:
The Jimi Hendrix Experience (great musicians)

OK, let's say I was just lazy, and didn't want to concentrate on this topic. But if ya really want it...
Reasons why I like Led Zep (just some):
-because of Jimmy Page and his guitar playing
-because they wrote and recorded Starway To Heaven
-because John Bonham played the drums like no one else out there (maybe except Mitch Mitchell)
-because they also did slower and bluesier songs (e.g. Since I've Been Loving You)
-because they named themselves Led Zeppelin
-because Dazed And Confused is so incredibly cool
-because Heartbreaker is one of the best guitar songs ever
-because of Heartbreaker's bass line
I probably forgot many other reasons, but
is this enough?
And, yeah, I don't even have all their albums.
Peace!

Best bands that most of you have probably never heard cuz they're CCM (Contempory Christian Music) but they're still extremely awesome and you should check them out:

~Jennifer Knapp!!! (not a band but an awesome chick with a pick...she's the all time best!)~
~Audio Adrenaline~
~Relient K~
~dc Talk~
~Tait~
~Newsboys~
~Third Day~

And Steven Curtis Chapman's new stuff from *Declaration* is really good, and Sonicflood is pretty good too, but they aren't quite as *rockish* as those other bands! :D

But yeah...alot of people aren't familiar with the CCM world, but there's really some great stuff out there, that's not preachy if you aren't a Christian, so I suggest checkin it out! :D

best bands ever.... lets see:

Led Zeppelin - (best band for obvious reasons. You couldn't ask for any better. They were the only band I have liked every song that I've heard.)
Black Sabbath - (different from everything of there time, and very original)
Ozzy w/ Rhoads - (Randy Rhoads with ozzy made some awsome music, nothing against Wylde, He's just not Randy Rhoads.)
Aerosmith - (must hav e been good, I mean there still around making hit songs)
AC/DC - (pure metal at it's best) enough said.

Hey newguy, Led Zeppelin didn't do Free Bird. Cut 'em a break. (Incidentally, I hate that song and every other Lynerd Skynerd song too!)

Hmmmmmm....reasons to love Led Zeppelin:

-Jimmy Page is a musical genius, and can play guitar with more emotion than anyone else out there
-Jimmy Page is a masterful composer
-Jimmy Page is a wizard in the studio
-John Paul Jones is a masterful composer, guitarist, bassist, and pianist
-John Bonham laid down the heaviest beat ever
-Robert Plant has one of the most dynamic voices ever--he can howl like Robert Johnson or sing sweetly like Paul Simon
-They introduced exotic instruments and techniques into their songs (bow, theramin, mandolin, etc.)
-Their talent extends far beyond any one type of music--they played blues, rock, folk, country, bluegrass, reggae (well, sort of), epic ballads, etc.
-They influenced just about every other band since
-They never sold out--no ****ty "Like A Rock" Ford truck commercials

To those who said they didn't like LZ, have you heard all of their songs? Or just whatever gets overplayed on the radio?

slaughteredsoul
12-31-2001, 09:54 AM
Uh..well i can't lie,the only LZ stuff i heard was the stuff they play on Mtv..but i've heard more than a couple of songs, and i didn't like any...i heard some stuff on radio too..i dont know.i just don't like them.

Well, fortunately I approve of your other musical tastes!!! ha ha :) It's nice to see Motorhead given some credit for a change. There's an underrated band. I saw them live once and they were spectacular. Apparently they came to the city where I live a few years ago (I missed that show) and my friend was tending bar at some joint across the street from the hall. He said Lemme drank 2, count 'em TWO, whole bottles of Jack Daniels by himself before the show. Yikes.

If you ever feel like giving Zep another try, check out In My Time of Dying, I Can't Quit You, or How Many More Times. They're heavy and bluesy like Sabbath.

Problem Child

AC/DC - (pure metal at it's best) enough said.
I have to disagree, AC/DC ain't metal, not really. They're more hard boogie - blues - rock or so. But not metal, I don't think so. They're the best rock'n'roll band out there, I'd say.

Well, people write songs about what's important to them, right? So if you're a Christian and musician, you'll probably be writing songs about God, because he is the sole most important thing in your life. You don't wanna sing about your girlfriend when you've been given the gift of unconditional love to the point where Someone died for you. I'm not against secular music at all (even though I listen to mostly Christian), but there's alot of stuff in secular music that alot of Christians don't wanna hear. Some songs are fine, but some are packed full of bad language and stuff like that. Plus, I really don't wanna hear people singing about sex or cheating on their girlfriends. Christian music gives us Christian music lovers a chance to hear music that allows us to dwell on good stuff! Aren't there enough love songs out there already? I'd much rather hear something deeper, something that hasn't been sung about before. Anyway, I'll admit that alot of Christian things (like Christan produced movies) are a step down from secularly made things, mainly because of lower budgets and stuff, but Christian music is VERY good. And it's just as good as secular music. I've even read secular articles about how Christian music is being ignored. It's good stuff. And I know alot of secular people who like bands like Relient K, Audio Adrenaline, Third Day, dc Talk, and Newsboys or people like Jennifer Knapp and Katy Hudson. There is more to Christian music than hymns :D

I have absolutely NOTHING against christian music,i dont listen to it,im not even christian, but thats not even why,i just dont like it BUT i wanna say that..most people on this board(and thanks to the numerous *best bands* posts:) ) are into heavy metal/rock/thrash/death metal etc...and very little of those songs are about girlfriends, love and sex.you want girlfriends and sex, you've got blink 182,you want love, there isnt a single pop song out there that isn't about love(come on,prove me wrong!)
Songs out there are based on personal struggles,war,oppression..things that matter. To many people, god isn't the most important thing in their lives..regardless of whether He should be or not..like u said, chick, people write about what they care about.
There is a 'point' to christian music, and there is a point to other things people sing about. Not ex-girlfriends though..

The Fury
01-03-2002, 11:51 AM
But why even call it christian music? I mean, if it's a rock song about god, why not just call it a rock song?

If there was a rock song about drugs you wouldn't call it a drug song would you.

ZakNafien

You don't wanna sing about your girlfriend when you've been given the gift of unconditional love to the point where Someone died for you.

That begs the question, did that actually happen?

I'm a christian all the way, I manage to read the bible everyday and pray to god everynight. But christian music doesn't appeal to me. Not coz of the lyrics or anything, but its the music. SO FAR, I haven't heard any christian band I liked. But then again I've only heard P.O.D. =]

Btw, a pop song that isn't about love - N'sync - Pop (it was played on the radio all the time here, i didn't intend to listen to it)

A metal song about love - Metallica - Nothing Else Matters

Speaking words of wisdom:

But why even call it christian music? I mean, if it's a rock song about god, why not just call it a rock song?

If there was a rock song about drugs you wouldn't call it a drug song would you.

I absolutely agree. I always thought that christian music is the music played in the church... But it seems, that it's the kind of rock where people sing about God and so. I think that lyrics are not the most important part of a song (it's not a poem and I do not understand most of them anyway :) ). If somebody wants to sing about God, let him do it. If he wants to sing bout sex, let him do it too. I'm a Christian myself and do not feel offended by any kind of songs (about sex, drugs, rock'n'roll, devil, whatever). I actually never came over the idea, that people would feel offended by any rock songs because of their religion. Damned! Religion can be a bad thing...
Peace

Biting my agnostic/existentialist tongue really hard...

I think the real reason Christian bands feel so compelled to label themselves "Christian" is a merely a product of the sickeningly "politically correct" mindset of the American culture. In the process of remedying our long history of social discrimination, I think we've gone a little bit too far the opposite direction. Before, people who were outcast just wanted to fit in. Now for some reason, we feel the need to officially recognize everyone's differences as some form of repayment. I don't quite understand it, but whatever.

Personally, I don't care what people choose to do or believe, just so they don't try to force their ideas down my throat.

(No offense intended to anyone)

I'm going to go play some guitar now! :)

OK smfulla, you're not REALLY supposed to prove me wrong, and that's just ONE song..(hey how come u know so much hehe;) )
and i wanted to say what barbietta said but she beat me to it :) plus i wouldn't have been able to express myself so well..
plus it's not what they're singing about, its the music..P.O.D are really bad by the way...i mean honestly, they suck lol
if everyone listened to Metallica the world would be a better place...

LOL yeah...I hafta agree that POD is terrible. There's only 1 song I like by them. Once we were going to this amusement park with my youth group, and the guys (who GREATLY out number the girls) wanted to listen to POD so we had to listen to them for 3 WHOLE HOURS! It wasn't fun. But yeah, there is Christian music better than POD haha!! :D

Metallica seems to be a pretty universal theme here...anybody ever hear of Iced Earth? They remind me of old Metallica, only they're still melodic and Matt Barlow sounds nothing like James Hetfield(neither do any of the other vocalists), and John Schaffer has to write some of the best songs I've ever heard, and his guitar playing is incredible, even just keeping the rhythm.

hi all,
Guns N' Roses in my opinion are out of business. I like the GnR where they started out( when Axl didn't have his cornrows) but now i still listen to their old albums and they best. The old Guns N' Roses rules and is way better than any heavy, black or whatever metal there is out there.
And my list of best bands
Aerosmith

It still sucks... :D

Well thats a bit harsh, I just like clarity of vocals, when someone screams ALL THE TIME, it seems to lose some of the impact, cause its not shocking anymore.

Don't get me wrong, screaming is awesome, but when its used as a climax. Like in The Grudge or Ticks and Leeches by Tool, or Digging a Grave by Faith No More. When its used all the time it gets a bit tired IMO.

But anyway... back on topic.

-Tool
-Faith No More
-Incubus
-Creed (First two albums, Weathered is craaap)
-Metallica
-Shihad/Pacifier
-Black Sabbath
-AC/DC

Wow, a lot of cool hardcore bands. But I'll have to go with ...
1) Marilyn Manson
2) Nirvana
3) Bee Gees
4) Korn
5) Eagles

Well, I'd prefer punk bands like Blink 182, Green Day, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Sum 41...

I'd have to say

1. The Beatles
2. Led Zeppelin
3. The Smashing Pumpkins
4. Radiohead
5. Metallica
6. Nirvana

I think all of these bands started something new in the world of music. In other words none of these bands were simple write-offs of other bands or they weren't rolling with "what was trendy" at the time they WERE the time.

My 2 cents...

NO NO NO NO NO they didn't not one iota of the music was anything other than a take on what other bands had done in the mid to late 80s. And as for Smashing Punpkins, I refer you to Sonic Youth.

nirvana, musically, was nowhere up to par as alice in chains or even soundgarden. but nirvana started a whole revolution in music that everyone past 1992 copied. "grunge" wasnt anything until kurt cobain wrote the songs he did, and MOST of todays rock music is inspired somewhat by one of those 4 bands from seattle.

claire, you should really buy the cd in utero, its one of the best cds ive ever heard. and im not a huge nirvana fan.

everyone should buy at least one cd from pearl jam, soundgarden, alice in chains, and nirvana and judge for themselves.

Or not.

I don't see the point in forking out money to have a cd of a band I don't like.

Claire

My mom is sooo obsessed with Eddie Vedder from pearl jam that it isn't even funny! my mom listens to them and nine inch nails and stuuf. But eddie vedder is her man!she also thinks chris cornell is hot. I was raised on the grunge scene because that's all my mom used to listen to, but i've kinda branched off into my own thing.I love pink floyd (as i've said a thousand times) and jethro tull(i play their music on my flute) but i also like some black metal like moonspell, therion stuff like that that has a little bit of a classical side. Therion has beautiful music. their cd Vovin is amazing. Has anybody ever listened to them?

Hey Claire you heard of a band called:

Decapitated?
Children of Bodom?

Im seeing them both soon :)

Hehehe

Aww.

They play Melodic, and Death metal, respectively.

HEAVY.

Claire
02-25-2003, 05:08 PM
that's really cool. I was really into the whole cannible corpse death metal stuff about a year ago(i know i already said that somewhere!) but I just can't listen to it anymore unless i'm in the mood for it. Nobody comes around here because it's in the boonies, but tool does come to pensacola sometimes which is not that far away. Actually my brother told me that he was gonna take me next time they came because they come like once a year. It's not the music of death metal that i have to be in the mood for, it's the vocals. Sometimes i'm just not in the mood for growly music!:p

I would post a list, but my list of "greatest/favorite" bands is constantly fluctuating, even daily... so I will just say that at some point, I have liked almost all the bands that have been mentioned, and some bands that haven't been mentioned yet... :D

This is a current version of and ever-changing list, not a best-ever or anything just what I like right now

Okay, first of all. Bad Relgion, and NOFX DEFINATELY don't belong on the list. Punk isn't talented music at all. I love punk, but its not talented music. I totally back you up with Dashboard though. That guy's great

and again, Bad relgion, The Misfits don't belong here. Great music, but anyone can play it. No punk band deserves to be on a top 10 list

This forum is about expressing opinions, not about bashing other people for whatever kind of music they listen too... watch that you don't cross that line... One of the guys even says "This is a current version of and ever-changing list, not a best-ever or anything just what I like right now" He's not even saying this is a "Best" list, just what he likes.

We don't want this place to turn into MX Tabs forums, so just keep it clean...

My two cents, at least...

punkrockguy318
05-29-2003, 11:21 PM
hey man, im not bashing punk. i love punk.. its my favorite music.. the suicide machines, operation ivy, choking victim, mustard plug, mxpx... one of the first posts was "im basing these bands off of talent" and most people went off of that trend. i didn't mean it to sound like i was disrespecting your opinion.

Yeah, I've been viewing a lot of the threads here for a while... It seems a lot better then Mxtabs forums.. Lol.. People would just go into like the punk forum and say "Punk is stupid listen to some real music" and so on.. and there wasn't much productive conversation. Maybe it was a lack of moderaters. I don't know. But this forum is really great in my opinion. And anyway.. my top five? (in no order)

ac/dc
metallica
pearl jam

We're all about increasing post count here. ;)

Dead or Alive (cause I don't wanna be castrated or anything)
Metallica
Opeth
Iron Maiden :D
Pink Floyd
AC/DC
Led Zeppelin ( although some things get really old  )
Rage Against the Machine (I know they helped destroy classic metal, but they're awesome ;) [if you disagree, just listen to 'Wake Up', 'Bullet in the Head', 'Killing in the Name', 'Know Your Enemy', 'Vietnow', and 'Freedom'])
Hendrix (if he counts as a band)

That's all the greats I can think of. Sorry, I haven't listened to more than 200 bands or so.

@ Zero: GYBE don't really have songs as such, but their albums are just like a series of tracks that all link into eachother.

Their best album IMO, is called F#A#oo and the best tracks from it are "The Cowboy" and "Nothing's Alright In Our Life" If you like them, then get "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven", which is a whole album of totally nonconformist insane excellence.

1. X-Japan

This band is the most talented rock band that my ears have ever been blessed by. Not well known in North America, but in Asia they are the known to be a modern legend. From their hauntingly beautiful ballads to their speed metal, their music maintains it's uniqueness. If you are interested in knowing more about them, I will be more than happy to supply u with my wisdom and video clips :)

2. Rage Against the Machine

Back when I first heard of them in the early 90s I was imediately drawn into their music. Infact they are the band who commenced my interest into rock music. I loved the unique style of Tom Morello's guitar tunes and zach's powerful lyrics. This is indeed a truely outstanding band.

3. Metallica

I really enjoy listening to the earlier music of Metallica, especially those awesome solos by kirk, however the newer stuff from the early 90s to today are not of my taste.

There are many more bands that i love to listen to that are not mentioned, but the above are the ones that stood out the most for my personal taste.
