I was just wandering of anyone here had bought a good head and speakers and built their own cabinet to house the speakers as a way to save money or give them more money for the head/speakers? I have built a lot of speaker enclosures for cars and am pretty good with internal volumes and such and was thinking it could have been a way for me to get something good a bit cheaper.

Anyone see any potential problems with that?

Well, if you know what you are doing with cabs, then it doesn't seem like a bad idea. But, speakers are roughly 90 bucks a piece. Wiring could be hard, if you want to do a stereo/mono hook up like Marshall 1960 cabs. But, if you want mono operation, it's really easy. Just make sure you know what impedance the cabinet is, because you don't want to inadvertently fry the output transformer in your head. I would say copy the demensions of normal cabinets, I'd recommend a large inner cavity for good bass response, and make it sealed. Openings in the cabinet make bass response less. And, to make it more simple, make it a straight cabinet. This also helps bass response as well.
