hi guys
jus wondering if you could pass on some tricks for a young lad like me to impress some of the girls and some of the other guitarists that think playing blink 182 is about as good as a guitarist can get.
Cheers.

Practice to perfection and don't play to impress.

don't listen to her =]]]]
(just joking)
well guitar is really a showing off sorta instrument isn't it =] It's what alot of ppl consider to be "cool". So here is a few "show off" tricks that I have seen used by other guitarists.

1. Behind the back. Good ol' Stevie Ray Vaughan (spelling?) uses this trick in some of his live performances.

2. Behind the neck. I think it was Jimi Hendrix who started this off, and I have even seen Kirk Hammett do it a couple of times

3. Under and Over the neck (of the guitar). I was at this site (http://www.guitar-heroes.com) and there are videos of these master shredders, and one dude plays a scale (going up the neck) playing with his arm over, then under, then over then under and so forth. I think that is VERY cool =]

Those are some "show off" techniques there, practice them heaps and score sum girls and get sum more respect =] (hehe)

Don't play with your teeth or anything stupid. The best way to impress the girls is not to impress them at all, but to concentrate on the music. Just play whatever music you want to play and be happy with it. The fun is not the girls but the pleasure of jamming with friends in the band room with your school combo. Have fun with it!

dude, there is nothing wrong with learning a few tricks along the way is there?
of course he can jam, and I agree that is the best part about being a gutiarist. But a few tricks wont hurt his playing. =]
fizz, just do what you want man =]

i dunno, see thing is
IM NOT STEREOTYPING, the girls I know, know nothing about guitars, so anything thats not obviously amazing wouldnt impress;)
PLUS - if no one played to impress, why did so many players come up with tapping...playing with teeth(id never do that..i like my teeth) andand the behind back stuff eh?! answer that :>

dude, you can impress girls with your playing, there's nothing wrong with that.Personally im extremely attracted to dudes who play guitar...BUT what i meant was what jazzman said, the best way to impress girls is not to impress them at all, dont do something stupid like playing with your teeth/toes/hair whatever, just play!
and if you're good, they'll be impressed.
i'm a girl,i'd know better;)

I was in a similar situation. After a while of playing guitar, people would say things like "so, what can you play"? And my answer would be something like "Umm... Err..." Then I'd list some obscure bands or songs no one's ever heard of, or say "I can play the solo to such and such", cos it was the only part of the song I wanted to learn, and nobody seemed that impressed(probably cos I'm not that good:) ) but I like to think it was because they weren't hearing what they wanted to hear.

So, to the piont. I learnt some T.V. themes and songs everybody knew (Red Drawf, Snoooker Theme, Wonderwall, American Pie) sort of a party piece, ones where people can sing along, cos non guitar players are impressed by the simplest of things as long as it keeps their interest.

Hope that helps.

dude, this guitar teacher I know of (I don't really know him as a friend, just talked to him once or twice over the net) transposed the little riff in the song survivor by destiny's child. That little intro riff when they're like landing on the beach or whateva. It's a BAD riff!!!!!!!
I'll tab it out, put it in a .txt and post it

Yea, I know this too well. Don't misunderstand me, I definitely do not play to impress people (I spend 99.9% of my playing time in my room), but when it comes to playing in front of anybody I always try to show off a little (especially in front of girls, but I suppose that this is a force of the nature) and end in doing stupid mistakes while playing (e. g. I can't play the D chord properly - don't ask me why). Anyway, to impress people hammer-ons and pull-offs are quite good, coz non guitar players do not actually know, how it works (magic, eh?). So just do something combinated with pull-offs and hammer ons (like the Heartbreaker solo or my personal favourite - the intro of AC/DC's Thunderstruck).

Hey Problem Child. I know a really impressive little solo to learn, which you might have seen. It's on the 'No Bull' DVD or VHS, and it's what Angus plays before 'Rock 'N' Roll Ain't Noise Pollution'.

You can also play songs the girls are into.if you play 'em well, they'd be impressed for sure.(though i still think the best way to impress is just to be good and confident about what you're playing)

Theres one you can do during a song, switch the pickup selecter to the bridge pickup ONLY, hold down the 3rd fret on the low E string and pick scrape all the way down to the trem. Another one, one that sounds like a plane flying overhead, can be done by switching in the neck pickup ONLY, and holding down the 12th fret. Pick scrape from your finger to the trem. Hope ya like the trikcs. Go to www.guitartricks.com for more tricks to try out, (Hint:go to sound effects).

I've been playing guitar for less than 6 months, and i dont have like unbeleivably huge Jimi Hendrix fingers, and im not sum prodigy... you know why i told wrote that? to show everyone that im just like any other beggining guitar player, and it really is hard to impress someone when you're not that great, but if you sit down and practice what im gonna explain for like 3 or 4 days ull totally impress everyone... first turn up the distortion on your amp, or use a pedal, then turn up the volume... now hold the high e string on the 10th fret with ur first left hand finger, and hammer onto the 13th fret, do this very fast... now take the one of the sharp edges of your pick and use it to lightly tap the 15th fret, what ur gonna be doing would look like this: 15p10h13h15 but ur gonna be doing it quickly, now ur prolly gonna hafta warm your fingers up first so play something with some hammers or vibrato and then keep practicing that tap... you can also try 19p10h15 or 20 p10h15 both on the high e or the b... it totally sounds like a metallica solo and ull impress everyone, expecially urself...

Showing off? Heh, one of the main reasons I learned to play the guitar, :D Well, kinda. But well, to help ya there, learn a couple of fast licks and solos. Some Metallica solos would help a lot, and of course, a blunt, serious, "there's nothing to it" face while executing the super-fast solo will really impress the girls, heh. Listen to a lot of other genres too, some game musics have impressive solos (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Soundtrack: The Tragic Prince).

Practice a lot, you don't want to blunder while in the middle of the performance, heh.

Sometimes it didnt even take much.. example:
I was sittin in the gym with one of my freinds, we had our guitars, some jocks come up to us "Wanna get showed up?" My freind was like "Oh, i suck, dont worry, it wont be hard".. and i was like.. "Lets see it". So he started playing blink-182. Then i started playing Iron Maiden (The Trooper Intro). He was all "Well, watch this!"... Played more Blink. I played Some Sabbath(N.I.B.), and they just kind of walked off. *LOL* Course, the guys had been 'playing' my freind's guitar so hard, i had to retune the freakin' thing. hehehe.

LOL @ Jocks. I've never understood all that jock business.

Krieselman13
01-04-2002, 09:55 PM
It seems like jocks have more muscle than they do brains, right. Does anybody here agree with me? It just that the popularity gets to their heads. They flunk school, they pick on minorities (such as PUNKs like me), they are just the type of people I dont prefer to be around.

smfulla
01-04-2002, 10:42 PM
I think that is only an american phenominon. Well it doesn't happen here atleast. Jocks are people who play sport right? For like teams and stuff aye? Well the people at my school who play sport, are real friendly, and a few of them are really good musicians as well, and I've performed with a few of them. I don't really get into playing sports unless its with mates and we're just mucking around. And I'm just hard out guitar, but I have friends who are homies, brainiacs, artistic, metal heads, sport heads (jocks as you call them), and yeah, average people. But the way I've heard people talk about those people you call jocks, they sound like rude dudes man. Someone should give them a swift kick in the.... or maybe not, but they suck!

Tony_Iommi
01-05-2002, 10:49 AM
Yeah, i cant think of any time i've been actually picked on, it's just that despite what they think, they arent good at EVERYTHING...

The Fury
01-05-2002, 02:50 PM
Yeah, I think its just an American thing cos the only time I see them is in s****y U.S programs like saved by the bell. (Although thats probably not even close to reality)

Mmmmm... Tiffani Amber Thiessen.....

Erm....... anyway......Yeah smfulla, thats pretty much what its like in England, although I've played all kind of sports pretty much all my life, I've never met anyone you could remotely describe as a jock.

saved by the bell was my favourite show!

....but in saved by the bell.....zack played the guitar....
dont really get jocks round where im at. just the nike adidas garage people who just look at you, an beat you up when they find a reason, (not me personally...but generally) - would that be a jock?

The Fury
01-14-2002, 12:36 PM

lol, most popular thing all my friends play is stairway to heaven, and to be honest, sorry if you all love it but i f**kin hate it, ive heard it SOOOOOO much from other guitarists - ive never heard the recorded version either!
what about the eagles? - hotel california?
umm..what else?

yea - id have to say it was that song that put me off led zep.
i havent heard much of them , but with this song being overplayed it put me off them sooo much. are there any other cool songs that people will know an like equally as much?

Problem Child
01-25-2002, 01:40 PM
Starway To Heaven, huh? I've never heard anybody playing it live, and I must say, that I like this song very much. And at the moment it's the song I most like to play, just for me, not to show off. I just really enjoy playing it.

slaughteredsoul
01-26-2002, 05:36 AM
The most overplayed song live i heard is Hotel California...i'm beginning to wonder if those people know how to play anything else! i feel it unfair for those bands such as 'The Eagles' and 'Led Zepplin' to have their songs overplayed and people like me(and others i presume) hate them for that.
Cause when someone says eagles..i think------> Hotel California
and Led Zepplin = Stairway to Heaven.
and that is why,i won't allow Nothing Else Matters to be overplayed!

fizz
01-26-2002, 12:12 PM
heehee
yea, but another metallica songs thats over played other than nothin else matters and sandman has to be puppets.
its not really that impressive once you know how to play it, its an absolutely wickid riff, its just that people play it over an over..im sure you know what im talking about.
another
GnR - Sweet Child O Mine. - i cant be bothered with this, since everyone who learns it only learns the intro! what about the rest, they all need smacks:D
who else here likes KFC?

But how does it relate to impressive tricks?

Dude the only way to impress girls by guitar playing is to be really really bad, chicks dig bad guitar players.

Some girls have asked me to pay something impressive, or showy for them so i just start to shred, then they say, yuch, i hate that stuff, you suck, and i tell them to **** off :) so from now on, when a girl asks you to play something impressive, play greenday, hahahaha :)

play some solos on your back. sliding across the floor. it sounds stupid but some local band did it and it worked.

smfulla
04-29-2002, 06:15 AM
that car stuff you talked about fizz.
You need a good tremolo for this. Before you play anything thing, dive bomb it out, and hold it there. If you can... reach over to the low E and start tremolo picking it. That'll get like a low engine noise, and then just play an E power chord while releasing the whammy bar pretty fast. Pull it up to a desired pitch, push it down really fast, shift the chord up a fret or a couple of frets and release pretty fast. Just keep on doing it. I dunno if it's exactly like a car or not, but it's enuff for people to turn around and go 'Hey, how'd you do that?'

Just play better than those Blink idiots. Fizz you obviously have the ability to think intelligently, therefore you should have the ability to play better than Tom Deschlong...if you play your best and do better than Blink...i'm sure people will be impressed...in my opinion anybody who can play any Metallica song from Justice and before is already better than Blink and has the ability to become great.

BloodXero
04-29-2002, 07:28 PM
hes right. if you play above what people expect you to play or something alot more complicated than they listen to then they're most likely gonna think you're good.

smfulla
04-30-2002, 12:09 AM
hehe, man, the thing I hate most is people who don't play instruments. You know, those people who think S club 7 actually can sing, and that Britney Spears is a great talent. I'm like playing a hard as solo or riff that took me months to learn, and the first thing that comes out of their mouth... 'Could you turn it down please'
ARGH!
So I end up playing that little craig david riff from 7 days, or that riff from survivor by destinys child, and they're like... 'Man you're good!'
I tell ya, in an ideal world, everyone would read and play music. Then instead of having arguments about whether pop is music or not, NO ONE would listen to pop.

Black Star
04-30-2002, 03:39 AM
Pop can suck 100% of my ****ing ****

AND SO CAN BRITNEY!!!! hehe

I know exactly waht you mean man. I shred, they say "you suck" i say "fvck you sh.itbrick"

i play some **** tehy want me to play they say "your ****ing good" i say "your still a sh.itbrick"

pop must be banned, it's the only way. And soon rap is gonna take over, and that's when i'll shoot myself.

If you want to "amuse" females with your guitar, do the following rather saucy trick.

Step 1. Pick a girl from the audience (preferrably a light one becuase she's gonna be sittin' on your amp).

Step 2. Tell her to mount your amp (missionary position type thing), one of the amps at the front of the stage prefferrably.

Step 3. Turn the bass right up. Turn the treble right down.

Step 4. Play as fast as you can.

I saw this trick done on a film called "Private Parts" which was about a seriously cool dude called Howard Stern who was a DJ and did this on a phone in to some hot chick on the radio.

it would definately suck if rap or pop took over the music world. but i doubt they're gona take over anything but the radio and tv. anyways in my hometown they already have. the "OLNY" rock station is Rock 101.1 KLOL. there's also two other stations that started out rock and turned against it. now all i hear on it is crap like limp bizkit and blink-182. and if they do play rock its only like the brand new single they you hear people humming or singing quietly everywhere. it seems like MTV has been taken over by gay reality shows like Real World and Road Rules that have absolutely "NOTHING" to do with music. but ... one thing that pop, rap, and crappy reality shows can never take is our guitars, old albums, and all of rock. rock has such a large community that it's immposible to destroy it all. i say the government seperate the rock community and the pop/rap community and put them on totally different sides of the US. that way we could have all rock stations on the radio. and no-stop rock videos on tv.

fizz
04-30-2002, 08:18 PM
There will always be a significantly smaller society who appreciates guitar music, until the hallowed day that metal is the new rap, if you understand what im trying to say here. and when that happens, i can wholeheartedly say that most of these little slipknot kids shall run away and find a new interest because of its mainstreamness. in a sense it would be better, because, as most trends, they go elsewhere, and when the kids do the same, only people who truly appreciate the music will be left. and i think thats for the better. Alternatively, id be absolutely fine if everything stayed the same as it was now. :)

BloodXero
04-30-2002, 08:23 PM

If metal became popular, here's what would happen. Everyone would say rap sucked, that pop sucked, and everyone would be an aparant metal head. Aparant because they really aren't. It'd be all those fake posers who claim Limp Bizkit is metal, pretending like they even know who the heck Black Sabbath, Slayer, Emperor, Cradle of Filth, CoB, and Stormlord are. It would be death for the metal society. It would mean that our genre would be degregated to nothing but a 'fad'. I don't ever want metal to be popular. Look what happened to metallica. Metallica was the closest thing to being mainstream, and when metallica changed, all those posers said 'Metallica sux coz they cut their hair', 'Metallica sux coz they're different now'. All because metallica's underground metal fan base was so huge, it was spilling out into the music industry, and when they said that metallica was popular... they became popular. And now metallica is regarded as sellouts. As has beens. I don't want metal to become that.

i only lived the first two years of my life in the '80s so i dont know what its like but i get it smfulla. i say we lead the posers away from our world of rock. at this point gay bands like slipknot and mushroomhead are polluting the metal society. i know that they're eventually gona go away but there's a chance the a bigger, crappier, worse for rock fad pops up like an uproar in new metallicas that last a couple years, being sell-outs the whole way and then finally getting to the point where everyone hates them. i just think posers should just stop polluting rock with fads and try another genre like rap. maybe they should have ultimate techno revolution and leave the real rock lovers to love rock.
