What artists are you listening to that are NOT being played on the radio? That means don't say Creed, Metallica, Blink 182, Clapton, Aerosmith etc. Be sure to include a link to that artist's web page so that we can check them out.

The music that is being played on the radio and MTV is such a small part of the music that is out there. There are a lot of independent record labels and artist that create some great music. It takes more effort on the part of the listener to search out these artists. Being exposed to the mainstream music is very easy...just turn on the radio or TV. But with a little effort on your part you can find some great music that you would never have found by just letting the radio dictate your listening habits.

Most of what I listen to falls in this category, but here is one of my favorites.

Would B.B. King count?

According to my definition BB King would fit. He is not played very much on the radio. But now here is my challenge to you. BB King is to blues what the Beatles are to rock. If you were to ask most people to name 5 blues guitar players, he would be in most people's list. And for some, he might be the only blues guitarist that they know by name. He is the brand name of the blues. Your homework is to seek out some other blues players......I'm a teacher, I always give homework :)

SteelSlider has a list of a few in this post
http://www.cyberfret.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=19

One of my favorites is Johnny Winter
http://www.johnnywinter.com

Here is a link to the All Music Guide. I think this is a great resources for learning about styles and artists. Click on the blues link on the main page, and do some searching. Then download some songs from someplace like MusicCity.com. If you find some artists that you like, buy some CDs and you have expanded your listening range. If you like BB, there are a lot of artist that you will like.

All Music Guide

If you decide to take this challenge, be sure and let us know what you find.....a blues quest.

"Getting To Know The Bands" SPOCK'S BEARD

I'm thinking, where have I heard that name before?... just recently, too. Then I thought, wasn't that the band Shawn mentioned...? LOL

Yep... it was... (So, when I hear of the same band twice in a week, does this mean I really do need to check them out???)

Well I have never heard Pantera on the radio (probaby because of the language) and I am a Pantera fan. I also like Dream Theater, they had a radio single back in like 1991, but they aren't main-stream radio by anymeans. I also like old sepultura, especially the Arise album.

I forgot the web links
www.dreamtheater.net
www.pantera.com

The new sepultura isn't very good compared to the days of 'Arise' so it's not worth even looking for a website of theirs.

Doni, you will love Spock's Beard :)

Put great song writing with great musicianship and you have Spock's Beard. You can check out some sound clips on their site. And if you buy a CD, start with "Beware of Darkness". They have 5 CDs and I love them all, but that is the one I would suggest as a first. They are progressive rock, so there is some technical aspects of the music.....like Rush, or Kansas. But very song oriented at the same time.

kitara...In United States Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Slipknot do actually get a lot of air play. It may be that in Germany they are less in the mainstream than in the US. I really like Tool and A Perfect Circle myself....but definitely mainstream and on the radio where I live. Type O Negative fits more the category of bands I am looking for. I don't think I have heard them on the radio before. But I do have quite a few student that listen to them.

Are there some good German bands that you can direct us to? And not Rammstein :)

Okay, quick trip over here since I'm on the computer... :D

It took me a little while, and I haven't made a big dent in the list, 'cause there are so many, but I have now listened to quite a few of those music clips on Spock's Beard's site. :D

Shawn, that's scary when you have at least some clue to the kind of stuff I like, but I admit, I do like the music I'm hearing from Spock's Beard. I just may have to put them on my CD "To Buy" list...

***

Well, I can't say I have any bands I can think of that would fit into this category. LOL...for someone who moderates on a rock band's forum boards, I honestly haven't done much music listening as of late (not even to the band whose forums I moderate). Time to make time for the music, I guess... but time gets so scarce.

I know of a couple of fairly well-known musicians known for their work in rock bands, who have great SOLO albums that will probably NEVER make it onto most radio, or be heard of by the general public, but even that doesn't exactly fit into what you're asking for.

Ok- here it is: www.geraldcollier.com

I picked up this cd from the dollar bin at record archive, which I do all the time just to find new stuff that I might like. If you don't like it, then hey, it's just a dollar. (Sorry, 10 10 220.) So I pick up this guy's cd, and hear the first track... well, here were my reactions...

Track One- That's a sad topic, but still very nice quality.
Track Two- Wow, what a poignant song. I wish I could play acoustic guitar like that!
Track Three- OH MY GOD! That is the most beautiful song I have heard in a long long time!!
Track Four- TELL ME WHERE TO BUY THIS CD!!!!
Track Five- *sniff, sniff* That... is.. soooo.... gorgeous!!!!! *sobbing helplessly over talent of gerald collier*

End of demo- What? You can only buy it on the internet? MOM!! Can I borrow your credit card??

check it out on napster or something :D it's all acoustic and very natural sounding, and I liked it a lot... I recomend the song "Fearless" as well.

Yeah, there are (and they don't sound like Rammstein:-)):

For all the little punks out there, I would suggest "Die Aerzte" or "Die Toten Hosen". Ok, both sing mostly in German, and the "spirit" of Die Aerzte comes a lot from their songtexts, so it would be better to speak German to understand it all (if you can, it'll be really funny). They don`t always sound like typical punk music, because they also have songs based on percussion or things like that, but the music is cool.
Die Toten Hosen did (as far as I know) two English songs:
"Raise your voice"- a cooperation with Bad Religion
and "Pushed again". Both songs (and many others) are really cool.

You should also check out the Guano Apes and the Donots. They are doing more the straight Rock thing, with a bit Crossover mixed in. The Guano Apes have a female frontman with an incredible voice. There exist some other "German-Rockbands-with-female-frontmans-shouting-it-out-loud", e.g. Die Happy, Eat No Fish, but in my opinion they aren't so good ... .

As "easy-listening" bands, I'd suggest Liquido or Myballoon, it's not my favoured music style, but they are ok.

We also have got some of these Limp Bizkit-like bands, for example 4lyn(n? don't know the exact written way), I think, you can listen to them, but they are not very amazing.

And we've got some good Heavy Metal bands. Perhaps you've already heard of Kreator? Or the Inchtabokatables, which do something like "Middle Age"-Metal. Blind Passengers are alright.
(If any body wants to know more German HM-bands, then tell me, we've got a local radio channel which sends some HM ...)

Last but not least, don't forget the Scorpions (well that might be something for the older generation), I absolutely don't like them, but as far as I know, they are one of the few German Rockbands that got known "over there".

All in all, German Rock is alright but not always amazing, German HipHop is good, too (DJ Tomekk might be known ... but I suppose this is not the right forum for HipHop)

By the way, would you call the Hellacopters, Weezer or Kittie mainstream? They just came to my mind ...

I forgot some good bands:
Oomph! (ok ... that's Rammstein-like)
Uncle Ho (Alternative-Grunge-Rock or something like this, I'd say)
Böhse Onkelz ( really cool Heavy Metal, some people say they are fascistic, but they are absolutely NOT)

soemething I didn't know- after the album that I had, I Had To Laugh Like Hell, gerald collier (who is something of a miserable musician) became a country artist. Not that I have anything against country, it just isn't my thing. Well then, that's all for now...

hey i was interested in die Toten Hosen.....
i first heard of them back in 1990....when i was in Kempen (near Krefeld) i saw a green wagon with a big "die Toten Hosen" stamped on the side in a big circle....
the kids we were with said it was a band and that they were pretty good...but we never got to hear them....
ever since then ive thought about that car and what they were like...but i dont know where to pickup a cd....(maybe i should look online huh)....anyways....they really are that good huh? i think its way past time i checked them out....

i had someone at my house and it was playing....we dont use our radio much....even in the car....
but my guest was like...."what do they do..play the stuff nobody listens too?"
i was like.."i guess...i dunno...."
anyhow....the channels have a website....called musicchoice.com where you can buy cd's of what you hear....if you go there and hit buy music then search these bands...it sends you to cdnow....and you can hear clips of the music...
i didnt search ALL the bands listed..but so far ive found alot of listings for string cheese incident and die Toten Hosen...i thought this was interesting...and you can buy the cd right there....
anyhow...just a suggestion for anybody who wants to hear what everyone else is talking about...

I decised to go check out spock's beard today when i had some time... All I can say is Great :D! they do a really good job. It takes a lot to get something like that out of me too. I am very opinionated about my music.

I must say (agree with others), here in Canada, the music they play on the radio sucks! There is only one good station, especially for rock, and even then, it plays a lot of pop, and so called "light rock". I drives me nuts.

I wish that there was a station for each type of music. I know which one would be listened to the most... ROCK!!! not light rock either... to make a joke on all of you americans out there, it's like comparing Canadian beer to American beer.... Same thing, but sort of watered down, and not so good :p

I am fairly young, not legal drinking age yet, but i can and have drunk several americans under the table, because they say our beer is "crazy" and we Canadians are insane :)

Anybody wanna say anything about this comment?

gotta sign off now

I like older music personally:

Led Zepplin
Ozzy Ozbourne/black sabbath
Metallica
Red hot chili peppers (well I know they are new but they've been out since the 80's and I like their early CD's)

I've also been listening to a band called Liquid tension experiment...... and I'm trying to find some more good music.

Steve....Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne/black sabbath, Metallica, Red hot chili peppers all get massive air play. They definitely do not fit in this category we are looking for. We are exploring bands that are not in the mainstream.

Liquid Tension Experiment on the other had fits very much into what we are looking for. LTE is made up mostly of the members of a band call Dream Theater. So that is a band you might want to check out. You can find info about LTE and other Dream Theater spin off projects on the Dream theater page.

This may qualify... at least in parts of the United States (they certainly don't get played on the radio where I am!).

I am a big fan of Scottish folk music, and Celtic music in general, and I have several CD's by the Scottish folk band Capercaillie. They probably do get some airplay in the UK, but I think they are still fairly unheard of in this country, except among Celtic music and/or folk music fans...

Their music is part instrumental, part vocal... Some of the vocal tracks are in English, some in Scottish Gaelic.

If any of you have the soundtrack to the movie of Rob Roy, they were on that (lead singer Karen Matheson was the ceilidh singer in the movie).

Their website is http://www.capercaillie.co.uk/

What about AC/DC? I mean, I've never heard it on the radio since I'd come to Austria. I read the posts about Austrian bands and radio and I can tell you one thing - Austrian radio is crap, they play only mainstream, no rock, no alternative, really nothing else. It's horrible. Since I've come to Vienna (5 years ago or so) I don't listen to the radio, except the Polish Radio 1 which I can receive here. They sometimes play AC/DC. And if you want something really never heard on the radio anywhere - I've got a CD by an English band from Cambridge, which I bought after their gig in a music pub in Cambridge. It's typical British guitar music, like Oasis' Definitely Maybe. The band's called The Other Garden, the album's called Step Out, Step In and contains only 5 songs.

My absolute favorite artist is 'Melissa Ferrick'. She is probably the person who most inspires me to play. I have seen her live 3 times now, just her and an acoustic guitar (she now travels with a drummer) and man, she can rock. Lyricaly, you can almost feel what she was going through when she wrote the song.

I also like the Wild Colonials. I think that their album "This Can't Be Life" borders on a masterpiece. Of course, not everyone agrees on this....lol.

Give 'Neko Case and Her Boyfriends' a spin. I think she used to front a punk band but she has made 2 country albums that I think are great. "Furnace Room Lullaby" is my favorite of these two.

Sag mal, kennen wir uns vielleicht vom dortigen forum???? (meckerliese) Weißt du warum das geschlossen ist???????

Gamma Ray (http://www.gamma-ray.com )

Tony Iommi (http://www.iommi.com)
Ozzy Osbourne (http://www.ozzy.com)
And Dream Theater.

I think the best two Dio albums are Dream Evil and Magica, cause they got Craig Goldy on them, whose style i REALLY like. and Hammerfall is pretty cool. Gamma Ray has Ex-Helloween guitarist Kai Henson.. Rhapsody is a Itilain Power Metal band, they're good...

I want to get the new ozzy album, for just the Ltd. Edition with the Randy Rhoads stuff on it. (Course, i bet the new music will be good, but i want the randy stuff!)

now, this is a really good peace punk band (don't be discouraged because its punk), and also don't turn away because of the name, they actually sing about peace, unity, and love. there newer stuff is the best you , can download 911 For Peace, a song they wrote about the 9/11 terrorist attacks, off there site, the band is called Anti-Flag, http://www.anti-flag.com/anti-flag

I don't know wether those guys get air time in the US, but they definitely do not get here (in no particular order):

Walter Trout (I just love his fiery style, he's (to my mind) the best electric blues player besides SRV)
Johnny Winter (great work, both on acoustic and electric guitar)
Steve Morse (He's simply crazy...)
Jeff Beck (really awesome guitarist)
Jimmie Vaughan (I like his "more minimalist" approach, compared to his brother's)
Big Bill Broonzy ( "Hey Hey" was one of the first songs I learnt...)
Eric Johnson (no wonder they wanted him for the G3 tour)
Robert Johnson (his playing is really unique, if I hear one of his songs I can instantly tell wether it's him playing it or somebody else...)
Muddy Waters (I have loved his music since I heard Clapton playing "rollin' and tumblin'" on the Unplugged album)
Ry Cooder (one of the most underrated guitarists, to my mind)

I also like SRV, Hendrix and Clapton a lot, but they fall into the "well-known, but still no air time"-category again (at least here).

I know that quiet riot probably wouldnt count as a band that dosen't get any air time, but..... There first two albums would, they were only relaesed in japan (they couldn't get a record deal anywhere else) But they had some really good stuff like, picking up the pieces, and laughing gas, and alot of others. I think they could have gone mainstream if the got a deal. But the best part is you get to see where Randy Rhoads came from.

If they did go mainstream Randy probably wouldn't have died at the young age of 26. But you really can't argue with the stuff he did with ozzy.

Hmm... I know ALOT of underground bands, but they are mostly Death/Thrash, which I know are VERY RARELY played on radio.

Well, I wouldn't wanna list everything, because I know the list could go on forever.

But here's some listenable death/thrash, melodic, brutal, heavy, Nu Age metal, bands:

Blind Guardian
Meshuggah
Children of Bodom
In Flames
Murderdolls (Joey Jordison's side project)
Tiamat
HELLOWEEN (Classic)
Iron Maiden (DAMN Classic)
Slayer (Haven't lost their touch yet)
Iced Earth

I LOVE Dimmu Borgir, but that would be too heavy for some people, I think.

Arch Enemy is good also...

My favorite unplayed bands:

Ayreon (prog rock)
Blind Guardian (power metal)
Sopor Aeternus (gothic)
Spock's Beard (prog rock)
Rhapsody (power metal)
Nightwish (power metal)
Therion (power metal...sorta)
Flower Kings (prog rock)

And then any number of 60's and 70's prog bands- most notably Camel, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant and Genesis.

There are others, but that's probably enough.

I've just begun to listen to ALOT of Iron Maiden. I don't think I've heard them on any of the local stations here, although I have seen one of their music videos (Run to the Hills) on MTV's Classics hosted by Stone Cold if that counts. Besides that Iron Maiden are unheard of on the radio at least around where I live.

Tonight I've been listening to the best of Skid Row, I've never been into them but the best of is good. The guitaring is pretty hot.

I also got out my Ugly Kid Joe album, their debut album that had everything bout you on it. I haven't listened to it in years and the guitarist is actually pretty darn good.

Did anybody get any of their other albums? Dunno how many they made coz I didn't hear any of their stuff after the first album.

I have also listned to kiss Alive II. It's ok but I was never into kiss growing up and they fall into that category of bands that if you didn't listen to em at the time you won't like em. Other bands in this category would be people like Motley Crue, Poison, W.A.S.P, Twisted Sister, Manowar etc.. ya know the kinda cheesy bands that were good at the time. If I was into em when they were around I'll still listen to em now but I can see why my younger bro won't.

Edit: Oh yeah, I found out the great Brian May lives near to me. It's the same district and only a couple of miles but there's quite a difference in the housing and people!

I've been listening to Medeski Martin and Wood quite a bit lately..

www.mmw.net

They're a jazz fusion trio, Medeski on keyboards, Martin on percussion and Wood on bass. They're very 'groove'-oriented, but it's still definately jazz. In fact, they all have killer chops. I've seen them live here in Edmonton, and I was absolutely blown away by not only their technical ability but by their cohesiveness as a band. I believe the website has some sound samples, you guys should definately check them out.

I've also been listening to the Frank Zappa album, 'One Size Fits All', and it's absolutely brilliant. I made a post about it earlier but no one seemed to care so I won't mention it much.

Well here is a guy that is not on US radio but is HUGE in Canada. This guy has toured with Rush, Triumph, Brian Adams and many more. He is considered an excellent guitar palyer. When I was a kid every guitar player wanted to figure out his intro to "Go for a soda" and when I did I became very popular teaching it to others. Go to download or buy Kim Mitchel's "go for a soda" and give it a try.
It is from the album "Akimbo Alogo"

How about Bathroy? And what about Blind Gaurdian? Iced Earth and them are awesome, But I would have to say if you were to buy an Iced Earth album, get Burnt Offerings or Night Of The Storm Rider. Awesome albums. And by the way, with Iced Earth's new singer (who isn't that bad, but nothing to Mathew Barlow) They will be played on the radio. They even have a video out now and it is being played over in Europe, so I hear. But yeah, they have a new record label and all, and this is what Jon Schaffer wants, so I geuss Hot Topic will have to exploit them beyond beleif soon. But anyways, Listin to Bathory!!!

I'm into ska, in it's various forms, and at least in my area there isn't much ska on the radio, but here are some (that are at least a little less well known than less than jake or the aquabats):

Five Iron Frenzy (www.fiveironfrenzy.com)
Mad Caddies (www.madcaddies.com)
Planet Smashers (planetsmashers.cdevco.net)
General Rudie (this is the least well known band on the list, and it's ska jazz and kind of cool, http://www.skapages.com/generalrudie/)

The best band out there touring today is Clutch! They have the gnarliest sets. They have been around for 16 years! Who else can say that except for Slayer. This band incorporates fictional lyrics with thumping basslines and a sound that is incomparable. If you haven't heard of them, I urge you to check them out. You won't find any blood curdling screaming, or demon like imagery. Just a no frills, badass mf ing rock band.

To My Surprise

It's a side project from a couple years ago by one of the "custom percussionists" from Slipknot. It's definitely not for the typical Slipknot fan, but it is a cool album to listen to. The sound is usually compared to '60s-era psychedelic pop.
