I thought I would add my vote to this. It is indeed the first one.

Man that songs hard to play. I think I play it quite well on my own then on the odd ocassion like today when I put the cd on to play along, it always shocks me how fast it is. I've been learning the main solo but I can't even keep up with the riffs yet lol
Do you guys alternate pick the verse riff etc? Coz I know james does only downstrums and I struggle to keep up without my arm being super knackered after. I know james is the downpicking king but do mere mortals achieve it or should I opt for alternate picking wherever I can?

Alternate picking it would get pretty complicated, I imagine. It would also mess up the rhythmic sound.
It's not that hard to eventually get it up to speed with downstrokes. Just practice it over and over and over. That wrist of yours will get a good workout with MoP :).

I've made a metallica compilation to play along with which leaves me completely knackered. If I ever get through it and still feel energetic I'd be well happy. The tracks I have on it are these:
Four Horseman
Motorbreath
Jump in the fire
Whiplash
No remorse
Seek & destroy
For whom the bell tolls
Fade to black
Creeping death
master of puppets
sanitarium
orion
one
harvester of sorrow
These are the songs I've learnt the most out of and they all kick ass, I'm usually knackered by the end of horseman :)

I always play MOP with my band...as a warm up for slayer:)
We play it faster than on the CD....
THEN AT THE END OF THE SONG I HAVE TO PUT MY HAND ON ICE :)
But it`s a good warm up

Yep, it's the first one. I can play it even though it's a bit sloppy, complete with pick scraping noise ;)

If it's not P.M. on the 6th string, it's not Metallica :)
