Living in Alaska we don't get many live shows. Especially in the winter. I will be sitting in the cabin surrounded by 160 acres of nothingness. Fireplace to my front, 2 trusty labs at my feet, 1 trusty girl at my side and 1 trusty acoustic in my hands!

I play guitar (and some crappy vocals) in a blues/jazz band, we're playing a private party at a hall. Not much money... but free beer and food. To be honest with ya's I would play for free if I could get someone to to carry and set up my stuff.

Well Fizz, we don't have any management so to speak. The Bass player, lets call him Paul, does our booking. He does the usual stuff like newspapers, flyers, etc... But he's hooked up with a local radio station and a coupla radio DJ's and we get some leads thru them. Also we are hooked up with a bunch of halls in the city, and we get some leads thru them as well. We also do a regular "pub crawl" where we go around town taking to bar managers and dropping off demo tapes. If your trying to get gigs it's a great idea to put together a demo tape of your best stuff, make a bunch of copys, and start going to places that you want to play talk to the manager and drop off a tape (they don't have time for you to get your stuff, set up, then play the a tune or two). It's much easier to get gigs when your playing around town (the reference thing, they'll call to check on the crowds). That being said, for your first dozen gigs have everyone you know show up, fill the joint to the rafters, have them get into what your playin' (and havin' them buy bunches of drinks or whatever helps too, remember they are in business to make money). You also have to learn to have a pretty thick skin, some of the folks you'll deal with in the business end are some cold hearted son of a guns. Then after you get a gig remember be on time, be ready to play, play full sets, and have fun.

good luck! don't get dis-couraged
