I've been playing awhile now and its time for me to get a new guitar. Alot of my favortie guitarist play 7-strings (Stephen Carpenter, Head, Munkey, and Dino Cazares)play 7-strings, but on the other hand James and Mick from Slipknot say its just a fad. What should I do?

What are some good guitars??

I'd stay with the 6-string

Well, it is a fad for the Korn style. I think a 7 string is awesome if you don't abuse that low range. Dream Theater is a perfect example of using a 7 string, but not abusing that B string. If you are into Korn and Fear Factory then by all means get a 7 string. I personally can't stand slipknot as guitar playing goes... their drummer is great. That's how most bands are today, the talent is in the drummers.

Good 7 strings are made by Ibanez and ESP. I would kill to have a Music Man John Petrucci 7 String. Its around 1500 bucks, but it's a great playing and great sounding guitar. It also can come with a piezo pickup in the bridge, which will give you acoustic guitar sounds. A 7 string acoustic.... very cool! If I were to buy a 7 string, I'd get a Petrucci signature.

ESP and Ibanez are great. I have played lots of both brands in 6 and 7 stringers, they are great guitars for their reasonable price tag. I have been disappointed with schectors... they just dont feel right to me. Try out lots of 7 strings, compare them to eachother and see which is the best for you. Take into consideration the quality of the guitar, the feel of the guitar, and the price. If the tone is lacking but you love the feel of it and it's the price you want, get it and put in some nice pickups. With the bands you are into, the EMG-707 or the high-output duncans will be perfect for ya. The EMG707 requires some modification to the guitar... but an ESP:LTD with the EMG-HZ 7 string pickups in it will not require modification, since it's made to fit the same type of pickup in it.
