Hello folks

My friend wants to buy a bass guitar and bass amp. Money is not really an option (within reason)maybe like $1500 Canadian for the amp and the same for the bass.

Looks matters a bit for him when it comes to the bass guitar. He loves the ESP (Tom Araya series) but the price is probabbly about over 3k us so umm ....nah

Please help

So for a newbie which is best?
lol he wants to buy the Ampeg SVT2 PRO
and the 810H cab

If he's never played one before, he shouldn't go all out. There's always the possibility that he'll end up not liking it, wasting his money.

My bass is an ESP, it's a lower line model though. I think it's the ESP-104. Cost me about $300 American, not sure how it relates to Canadien money. I still haven't bought an amp for it, I'm using my sister's 15w Rocktron, which cost about $100 I think. She never plays bass so IDK why she has it, but it's served me well enough (until I become a full-time bassist that is.)

pops right, dont go all out and spend $1500+ on a bass and amp if you never play before, you dont want to have wasted the money if you dont stick with it.

i would recommend getting a cheaper bass within the $300 range. Ibanez and Yamaha make some good cheap basses in the $150-250 price range. the bass that pop suggested it pretty decent, ive seen and heard him play that. as for an amp, just get a smaller practice amp. i wouldnt recommend going higher than 25 watts, at least not until you decide if you are really going to be serious and stick with it or not. i dont know too much about bass amps, but if you can find a good cheap SWR (made before the fender take over) or a hartke, it should suite you fine. also if you see a dinosaur amp try it out, some of their stuff sounds pretty good for cheap prices.

that about all the advice i can give you with the amount of knowledge i have. good luck.

I agree with your advice guys but my friend will not settle for low end stuff. He has been using my bass (I bought it for my studio. I play guitar) and has been playing for a month now. He is doing well as he is already playing along with my Cult Electric CD. He is debating between Peavey and Crate to start but has his heart set on Ampeg.

I do appreciate your input though. You backed up what I have suggested.

ok teh bass master is hear... lets look at this... dotn want low end stuff.. look at price.. and from what ive read marz ya seem quite up there in teh profession area.. so im jstu gonan assume your friend will have some music talent or will at least learn well... my suggestions would be

a bass... a warwick corvett.. any kinda really the 'vets are nice basses all around
http://www.warwickbass.com/basses/fnajazz2002.html

amp.. ampeg.. all the way.. but as for what one i woudl need to know what kinda music hes playing how much wattage he wants and what kinda shows if any he will be playing. the svt4pro is the best one they make .. the svt5 is their biggest with 2 channels one with distortion and with more wattage BUT i have read and heard many a bad thing about it.. personally i woudl stay away from it but if ya got the money to fix it if somthing goes wrong be my guess to try it out
http://www.ampeg.com/

personally im saving up for a b4r its a very nice amp and well suited for my needs with the wattage and everything.. (honestly... its wayyy more wattage then i need right now but louder the better :D)

and for a cab its up to personal desicion.. i would say ampeg or swr.. btu as for what kinda ya would need to look at the amp wattage... and again its personal preferanc.. he might want a 4x10 and a 1x15 or a 6x10 or an 8x10 or even a 2 by 18 ya never know

again personally i use a 4x10 and a 1x18.. works very well for metal and my bass. (an ibanez EDA905)

well i hope that helps ya out

Thanks BassTallica both my friend and I just read your post.

You actually choose very similar to what he wants.

However, he has a question. Why did you say that the SVT 4 pro is best and not the SVT 2 Pro which is tube?

Thanks again Marz.

well teh stv2 pro is a much smaller amp only 300 watts... its still good though but the stv4 pro is the best puttin out 900 watts average.. its the daddy of ampeg amps (imo) ampeg claims the stv5 pro is their master amp but i cleary say the 4 pro.. and on the ampeg site if ya go to artist ya can click on 90 percent of teh artists who use ampeg and see their gear alot of them use the 4 pro
