Well EMG makes all those pickups he listed, a bunch of different bass pickups, and they make passive pickups as well. Here's a brief discription of what each p/u is like...

EMG 81: designed for the bridge position. It is the hottest EMG made, perfect for metal: leads and rhythm. I actually the clean tones that come out of it.

EMG 85: lower output than the 81. Designed for the neck position. It has a more mellow tone compared to the 81, but is also perfect for metal. I've gotten awesome blues out of these as well.

EMG 60: It's a tighter sounding neck pickup compared to the 85. Almost like a single coil... but with the balls of a humbucker. James Hetfield uses the EMG 60... just to give an idea of what it sounds like.

EMG 89: It is a dual mode active pickup. It is the only coil tappable EMG active pickup. It is a neck pickup. Can be described as sounding like an 85 in humbucker mode, and the EMG-S in single coil mode. I would buy this pickup over the 85, just for versatility.

EMG 90: Designed for hollow body guitars. It is the 'floating' active pickup. I don't really know much about this pickup.

EMG also makes a bunch of single coil pickups...
