I've been playing guitar for a while now, but mostly punk rock, but i've always listend to a bit of metal never really tired to play it thought until this summer i really got into slayer a lot, one of my favorite bands really. Anyways, i can play fairly fast, and fairly decent leads, punk rock leads anyways, i am really wanting to learn speed metal and the type solos that jeff and kerry play for slayer. as of right now i have a esp ec300 with no floyd rose, so that kinda cuts me back, but what do i need to learn or practice to learn to play that fast. Like i said i can tremlo pick a minor scale out pretty fast, can do hammer-on's, pull off's, most of the stuff used except finger tapping, any secrete to learn to finger tap? Just wondering what i could to do get that good. to reach metal greatness.
Thanks
Brian Ross

Practice. Search through some other threads for inspiration.

learn scales... if ya know the scale of the note the song is in you can basically use a simple blues scale or what every and play a solo... look at kirk from tallica... 90% of his solos are the same scale just play diff but they coem out good and work well with the songs

tapping (http://www.cyberfret.com/techniques/right-hand-tapping/index.php) --you may have to be shown in person, idk.
you could definitely use tapping, pull-offs, hammer-ons and any other technique.
practice scales, wilth a metronome, getting progressively faster. Insane left hand speed is always good to have.
ou don't have to stick to one scale throughout the song, add in some notes outside the scale, a chromatic scale, bends and vibrato... Makie sure you learn pinch harmonics too, there's a lesson for that on cyberfret.com.
Anything else you have q's? about anything else just lemme know.
And it's refreshing to hear someone dedicated to becoming a great.

it's great that you think kerry and jeff are great, i just saw them in concert sunday night at bogarts in cincinnati, awesome!! they are both insane, but pretty underrated, or unrecongnized guitarist out there.
They've pretty much mastered the art known as Fret Masterbation.

Slayers solos are usually really diminished sounding. Ive not really studied their solos that much but it sounds like they use the Locrian mode alot. They also use pentatonics scales outwith the key of the song to give that disturbed feeling
I think for example if they are in the key of E minor they use an F# minor pentatonic shape. I need to investigate that tho....

i just listened to some slayer for the first time. not my type of music. but they do have some skills. although i can play drums, and all guitars better by myself, all at the same time, with my willy.
I dont think my willy gets that angry though.

I think when slayer do solos, they're just hitting random notes and playing fast, rather than thinking about scale shapes. Sounds good though.

I think slayer really doestn't worry about scales either, i think they play what sounds good and fits in the song. Really that's how i do it anymore, i don't give a crap about a certain scale as long as it fits in the song i'm playing it's all good with me, but i don't think they just play random notes.

Slayer invented their own scale, dude.

how do you get they invented their own scale? that's almost impossible considering pretty much evey guitar scale has been created, or just a form of another scale, or a mode. I don't know much about guitar/music theory but i'm pretty sure that they didn't make up their own scal. Granted that nobody does play like them that i've heard, but you give me proof that they made up their own scale and i'll beleive that.:

Well take a look at Raining Blood. The great majority of the riffs are not centered around the same tonic. This is a kind of playing that's usually called atonal. Slayer pulls it off by not having much backing, therefore there's not much to clash with. I am really impressed with their almost random riffs.

it's really not hard to duplicate those riffs they play after just listening to them for a while. i just doesn't seem that hard to me, some of it is yes but for the most part it's not too bad.

Yeah, they're not hard to play, but they're not easy to write and have them sound nearly as good.

they do make the sounde excellent, and it truely fits their music better than anyone elses. they have created something unique with their music which is the best ****ing speed metal there is out there.
