I have tried to improve my speed by alternate picking..But one huge problem arises....

say i have a tab like

------------
------9p7-
---5-------
-----------
-----------
-----------

My speed automatically comes down as i try to shift from fret 5 to fret 9(3rd finger) and fret 7 (1st finger)...Has this been happening only to me....Or is this way when everyone starts out trying to play fast???

Please help me

don't worry, everyone has or has had trouble with changing strings with alternate picking. Just keep practicing it heaps and it'll come

For that type of lick I would use the index finger on the 5th fret and plucking the 9th fret with the pinkey to the middle finger which should be on the 7th fret. heres and example of what I mean.
The numbers below the tab show which finger to use. 1 = index, 2 = middle, 3 = ring, 4 = pinky.
E:-------------
B:------9p7--
G:---5-^-^--
D:---^-4--2--
A:---1---------

this kind of stuff Is what i and alot of people like to call "Shortcuts". Making something easier so you can do it faster.
I hope this helps you out. If not maby someone else can help ya.

Mess around and play it slow. Play it over and over till it is up to speed. Practice.
